Carmarthen Rotary Club
CARMARTHEN Rotary Club met on Monday, October 22, in the Ivy Bush Royal Hotel. President Mary Thorley welcomed members to the business meeting.
This is where members can make comments and suggestions on what has been discussed in the council meeting. Rotary is a democratic organisation, so nothing is decided without the agreement of the whole club. Members were very pleased to donate to a number of local organisations and causes, including Dr Mz’s and Carmarthen Youth Opera. President Mary noted that the club had been featured in the District Rotary magazine, ‘The Spokesman’.
The article related to the visit by Dr David Nott to receive his Paul Harris Award which was given to him for his selfless bravery in treating patients in crisis situations and training trauma surgeons in war-torn areas.
World Polio Eradication day fell on October 24. To mark the day, Rotary clubs all over the world illuminated notable city buildings in purple. Purple dye is applied to the fingers of children who have received the immunisation and they often display them as a ‘badge of honour’.
The Rotary theme this year is ‘Be the Inspiration’. New district governor Clive Edwards has been inspired, following the ‘Ocean Summit’ held in Cardiff earlier this summer, to choose ‘Turning the Tide’ on plastic as one of his projects this year. According to Greenpeace, an estimated 12.7 million tonnes of plastic ends up on our beaches each year. DG Clive would like Rotarians to become involved in ‘Turning the Tide’.
The next lunchtime meeting will take place on Monday, November 12. For our working members, we have an evening meeting on Monday, November 26, where David Cooper will be speaking about the crown jewels.
