The Guns Fell Si­lent Gar­nant branch of the Royal Bri­tish Le­gion are hold­ing a con­cert to mark the end of World War One, en­ti­tled The Guns Fell Si­lent, on Fri­day, No­vem­ber 9, at Christ Church, Gar­nant, at 7pm. Come and help us re­mem­ber those who did not re­turn home to this val­ley, and also those who re­turned but were never the same. Re­mem­brance Day ser­vice Gar­nant Royal Bri­tish Le­gion’s Re­mem­brance Day pa­rade will be held on Sun­day, No­vem­ber 11, at 10.45am at the Ys­gol y Bedol Memo­rial, with a ser­vice at Christ Church, Gar­nant, to fol­low af­ter­wards. If the weather is bad, we will meet in the school hall.

Glow in the dark disco Y Ganol­fan, Com­mu­nity Cen­tre, Glana­man, will be hold­ing a glow in the dark Hal­loween disco to­mor­row at 8.30pm, in­clud­ing a best-dressed com­pe­ti­tion, suit­able for ages 0-12 years. En­try £1. Cwmamman Se­nior Cit­i­zens Cwmamman OAP branch meet from 2pm to 4pm ev­ery Thurs­day at the Com­mu­nity Cen­tre, Glana­man. The branch sends their sym­pa­thy to the fam­ily of Mary Har­ries, who passed away re­cently and who was one of our old­est mem­bers. Our next trip will be to Car­marthen on Wed­nes­day, No­vem­ber 14, and our Christ­mas din­ner will take place at Gar­nant Golf Club on No­vem­ber 28. Mari formerly lived on the Twyn, Gar­nant, and was formerly a faith­ful mem­ber of Christ Church, Gar­nant, as well as the Moth­ers’ Union group. Mari was also one of the old­est mem­bers of Cwmamman Old Age branch also. She will be sadly missed. Con­grat­u­la­tions to Miss Smed­ley’s class who won the ice creams last week for speak­ing Welsh through­out the week; da iawn, blant. Pupils have been en­joy­ing Sun­day ser­vice var­i­ous ac­tiv­i­ties: nurs­ery pupils have been plant­ing bulbs in the na­ture area ready for the spring. Mean­while, pupils have been en­joy­ing men­tal maths ac­tiv­ity in the out­doors, and Year 4 chil­dren have cre­ated an im­pres­sive por­trait of Henry VIII us­ing nat­u­ral ma­te­ri­als. Lo­cal war he­roes trib­ute To mark 100 years since the First World War ended, on Re­mem­brance Sun­day, No­vem­ber 11, from 2pm to 4pm, the Memo­rial Hall hosts a unique trib­ute to those lo­cal young men who fell and those who sur­vived the 1914-18 global con­flict. In an ar­ray of pho­tos of lo­cal sol­diers, some as yet uniden­ti­fied, let­ters, films, songs and sto­ries their brav­ery will be re­vis­ited. The 42 men named on the war memo­rial, in­clud­ing those from Bancf­fos­fe­len and Myny­d­d­cer­rig, will be joined for the first time by 70 oth­ers, with Cr­w­bin men, who sur­vived. En­try is free with light re­fresh­ments served in the in­ter­val. The event is not con­sid­ered suit­able for young chil­dren.

Clwb Hamd­den Mem­bers next meet from 2pm on Tues­day, No­vem­ber 13, in the Bancf­fos­fe­len and Cr­w­bin Hall. The guest speaker is Mary Thor­ley on the sub­ject of Car­marthen at Christ­mas. Cr­w­bin Sil­ver Band Un­der their mu­si­cal di­rec­tor Craig Roberts the band is pre­par­ing for the South East Wales Brass Band As­so­ci­a­tion con­test in Cardiff on No­vem­ber 24. The test piece for the 2nd sec­tion is Oceans by Goff Richards. Li­brary Open­ing times at the Memo­rial Hall are Mon­days 10am to noon; Wed­nes­days 10am to 1pm and 4pm to 7pm. Users can bor­row up to 10 books while there is free in­ter­net ac­cess dur­ing li­brary open­ing hours. DVDs can be rented.

Probus Club The Burry Port and Pem­brey club met re­cently. The guest speaker was Ernest Young who was born in Merthyr Tyd­fil and spent his child­hood in and around Merthyr Vale and Aber­fan. With the aid of films and knowl­edge of the area he gave an ex­cep­tional and emo­tional ac­count of the dis­as­ter which hap­pened 52 years ago on Fri­day, Oc­to­ber 21, 1966 at Aber­fan. The talk was ap­pre­ci­ated by all mem­bers. A spe­cial vote of thanks was given by John Prick­ett. The next Probus meet­ing is on No­vem­ber 7 at the Ash­burn­ham Ho­tel.

Friends of Ten­ovus Can­cer Care The Pem­brey and Burry Port friends have started a Meet with Us group on the first Tues­day of the month from 6.30pm to 7.30pm in Pem­brey Church Hall, Ran­dell Square, Pem­brey. The chil­dren raised a fan­tas­tic £330 for Macmil­lan.

A huge thank you to ev­ery­one who came to sup­port the event and do­nated some amaz­ing cakes.

Cof­fee morn­ing The vil­lage’s con­tri­bu­tion to the World’s Big­gest Cof­fee Morn­ing in aid of Macmil­lan Can­cer Re­lief was held in He­bron Vestry and was well sup­ported. The fi­nal amount raised was £650. Many thanks to all who gave their sup­port and to those who do­nated raf­fle prizes.

Fire­works evening Myny­d­dy­gar­reg Hall will be hold­ing its an­nual fire­works dis­play on Mon­day from 6.30pm on­wards.
