The Guns Fell Silent Garnant branch of the Royal British Legion are holding a concert to mark the end of World War One, entitled The Guns Fell Silent, on Friday, November 9, at Christ Church, Garnant, at 7pm. Come and help us remember those who did not return home to this valley, and also those who returned but were never the same. Remembranc­e Day service Garnant Royal British Legion’s Remembranc­e Day parade will be held on Sunday, November 11, at 10.45am at the Ysgol y Bedol Memorial, with a service at Christ Church, Garnant, to follow afterwards. If the weather is bad, we will meet in the school hall.

Glow in the dark disco Y Ganolfan, Community Centre, Glanaman, will be holding a glow in the dark Halloween disco tomorrow at 8.30pm, including a best-dressed competitio­n, suitable for ages 0-12 years. Entry £1. Cwmamman Senior Citizens Cwmamman OAP branch meet from 2pm to 4pm every Thursday at the Community Centre, Glanaman. The branch sends their sympathy to the family of Mary Harries, who passed away recently and who was one of our oldest members. Our next trip will be to Carmarthen on Wednesday, November 14, and our Christmas dinner will take place at Garnant Golf Club on November 28. Best wishes to any of our members who are ill at home or in hospital; get well soon. We would like to wish our bingo-caller Gareth a happy 80th birthday today; have a nice day. Cheese and wine A cheese and wine evening will be held at Y Ganolfan, Glanaman Community Centre this Friday, starting at 7.30pm. There will also be a quiz, and a comedian to entertain. For adults only, entry is £6, and alcoholic beverages will be available.

Half-term activities Continue at Y Ganolfan, Glanaman Community Centre tomorrow, there will be a slime party starting at 1.15pm. Also on Thursday a Glow in the Dark disco has been reschedule­d, from 6pm to 8.30pm. Meanwhile, on Friday, you can enjoy some Turtle coding from 10am to 2pm.

Bereavemen­t Her many friends were sad to hear of the passing away of a well-known and much respected local lady, Mari Harries, of Cwmamman Road, Glanaman, at the age of 92. Mari formerly lived on the Twyn, Garnant, and was formerly a faithful member of Christ Church, Garnant, as well as the Mothers’ Union group. Mari was also one of the oldest members of Cwmamman Old Age branch also. She will be sadly missed. Ysgol y Bedol snippets Ysgol y Bedol’s annual harvest service was held on October 25 at nearby Christ Church. Congratula­tions to Miss Smedley’s class who won the ice creams last week for speaking Welsh throughout the week; da iawn, blant. Pupils have been enjoying Sunday service various activities: nursery pupils have been planting bulbs in the nature area ready for the spring. Meanwhile, pupils have been enjoying mental maths activity in the outdoors, and Year 4 children have created an impressive portrait of Henry VIII using natural materials. Grand fireworks display Remember, remember the fifth of November! Cwmgors RFC’s junior section will be marking Bonfire Night with a grand fireworks display on Saturday, November 3, promising to be bigger and better than last year, with family fun for all. There will be burgers and hot dogs, sweets, hot/cold drinks, plus music and refreshmen­ts in the club afterwards. Tickets are £3 each (under-3s free), display starts at 6.30pm (gates open 6pm).

GCG OAP Branch At the next monthly meeting on Wednesday, November 7, Parti Anthony Evans will entertain us. Annual Christmas craft fair Y Lolfa Llyfrgell Gymunedol will be holding their annual Christmas craft fair and Santa’s grotto on Saturday, December 1, between 2pm and 4pm. Book your table now. Sports club Is held at GCG School every Monday in the main school hall for years 3 to 6 (free taster for the first session), between 4.15pm and 5pm. Entry is via the gym entrance at the rear of the main school car park.

Bristol excursion GCG School PTA’s shopping trip to Bristol will be on Saturday, December 1, cost £15, leaving the school at 8am. Anyone interested is asked to give their names to any PTA member.

Local war heroes tribute To mark 100 years since the First World War ended, on Remembranc­e Sunday, November 11, from 2pm to 4pm, the Memorial Hall hosts a unique tribute to those local young men who fell and those who survived the 1914-18 global conflict. In an array of photos of local soldiers, some as yet unidentifi­ed, letters, films, songs and stories their bravery will be revisited. The 42 men named on the war memorial, including those from Bancffosfe­len and Mynyddcerr­ig, will be joined for the first time by 70 others, with Crwbin men, who survived. Entry is free with light refreshmen­ts served in the interval. The event is not considered suitable for young children.

Clwb Hamdden Members next meet from 2pm on Tuesday, November 13, in the Bancffosfe­len and Crwbin Hall. The guest speaker is Mary Thorley on the subject of Carmarthen at Christmas. Crwbin Silver Band Under their musical director Craig Roberts the band is preparing for the South East Wales Brass Band Associatio­n contest in Cardiff on November 24. The test piece for the 2nd section is Oceans by Goff Richards. Library Opening times at the Memorial Hall are Mondays 10am to noon; Wednesdays 10am to 1pm and 4pm to 7pm. Users can borrow up to 10 books while there is free internet access during library opening hours. DVDs can be rented.

British Legion headquarte­rs The Legion building suffered extensive water damage during the recent severe storm and needs help or donations for the repairs, but after having the electrics passed as safe they have managed to open downstairs for the bingo but you may wish to check in advance. Garden club On Monday there is a meeting of the Pembrey and Burry Port Gardening Club at 7pm in the Community Hall, Pembrey. Paul O’Neill will give a talk on Plants I Have Killed. Cost £1.50 for members and £2.50 for non-members at the door to include a raffle ticket and refreshmen­ts. Christmas fair coffee evening The Ladies’ Fundraisin­g Section of Burry Port Male Choir are holding their usual Christmas fair on Friday, November 16, at 6.30pm in the Memorial Hall, Parc y Minos Street, Burry Port. Stalls include cakes, jewellery, bric-a-brac, toys, books, toiletries, pickles, accessorie­s and several raffles. Entrance of £2 includes tea, coffee or squash plus the added attraction of informal entertainm­ent by the Burry Port Male Choir.

St Mary’s Christmas fair St Mary’s Church will be holding its Christmas fair on Saturday, November 17. Stalls include clothes, jewellery, bric-a-brac, books, tombola, toys, etc. Doors will open at 2pm. Admission £1, which includes tea/ coffee.

Probus Club The Burry Port and Pembrey club met recently. The guest speaker was Ernest Young who was born in Merthyr Tydfil and spent his childhood in and around Merthyr Vale and Aberfan. With the aid of films and knowledge of the area he gave an exceptiona­l and emotional account of the disaster which happened 52 years ago on Friday, October 21, 1966 at Aberfan. The talk was appreciate­d by all members. A special vote of thanks was given by John Prickett. The next Probus meeting is on November 7 at the Ashburnham Hotel.

Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care The Pembrey and Burry Port friends have started a Meet with Us group on the first Tuesday of the month from 6.30pm to 7.30pm in Pembrey Church Hall, Randell Square, Pembrey. Come along and meet our friends group for a cuppa, a chat and maybe join our volunteer list and help us put the fun in fundraisin­g. Refreshmen­ts and a raffle available. The children raised a fantastic £330 for Macmillan.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to support the event and donated some amazing cakes.

Welfare Associatio­n The next meeting will be on November 7 at 7pm in the Welfare Hall. Arrangemen­ts will be finalised for the village Christmas event – Nadolig 18 – to be held on Friday, November 23, starting at 6pm in Hebron Vestry. Other local organisati­ons are asked to avoid clashing with this date for any event that they may be planning. The organisati­on would welcome additional support, so anyone interested in helping is asked to come to the next meeting. Cinema The film showing at Cross Hands Cinema on Friday, Monday and Tuesday will be King of Thieves (Cert 15). Doors open at 6.30pm with film starting at 7pm. At the recent annual meeting of the cinema trustees, pleasure was expressed at the completion of the external redecorati­on of the hall, the new external signage and the yellow parking blocks in the hall’s car park. Coffee morning The village’s contributi­on to the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief was held in Hebron Vestry and was well supported. The final amount raised was £650. Many thanks to all who gave their support and to those who donated raffle prizes.

Senior Citizens The Mynyddygar­reg Senior Citizens over-50s social club will hold their November meeting in Mynyddygar­reg Welfare Hall on Wednesday, November 7, at 2.30pm. Fireworks evening Mynyddygar­reg Hall will be holding its annual fireworks display on Monday from 6.30pm onwards. This display always attracts a huge crowd to enjoy a fireworks display in a safe environmen­t. The evening will include dancing men in tights, music, sweet shop and barbecue. Come along from 6.30pm onwards.

Bingo There will be no bingo session tomorrow but will resume on Thursday, November 8, at Clwb Rygbi Mynyddygar­reg at 7pm for 7.30pm.

Ty Golau As usual, Ty Golau will be holding their memory sessions at Mynyddygar­reg Welfare Hall on Wednesday morning from 10.30am until noon.
