MEDAL JOY FOR DYFED ATHLETES
athletes came away with five medals at the Welsh Athletics and Welsh Schools Indoor Combined Events Championships at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff.
A group of 15 from the district entered the competition to test themselves against other top athletes from across Wales. A number of new personal bests were recorded, with many gaining their first experience of indoor combined events.
There was a 1-2 podium position for Dyfed athletes, with Freddie Webber (Coedcae) and Osian Roberts (Bro Pedr) taking gold and silver respectively with their points totals tallying 1,498 and 1,366.
The pair took a number of topthree positions in each of the four disciplines and this was rewarded at the conclusion of the event.
Elsewhere, there was a ninth-place finish for Jack Thomas (Queen Elizabeth) with 888 points, which was finished off with a strong 800m run.
The fourth athlete in this age group was James Sloyan (Model) who, competing with the year 7 and 8 athletes, took the gold medal in the under-13 Quadrathlon championship.
James Price (Haverfordwest High School) was the sole representative in the under-16 boys’ age group, and he finished ninth, scoring 2,115pts.
There was strength in depth in the under-13 girls with a group of seven among the 43 to participate. Lucy Wintle (Y Preseli) came away with an individual silver medal with 2,058pts just ahead of Chloe Simmonite (Coedcae), who was third with 1,991pts.
Three of the next five positions also went to Dyfed athletes in a dominant display from the young stars. Jessica Lee (Dyffryn Taf ) was fifth on 1,904 followed by Lleucu Lloyd ( Y Preseli) in seventh with 1,880. Hannah Forkuoh (Coedcae) came second in the long jump and as a result came eighth on 1,834.
Pembroke and Haverfordwest High School pupils Maddy James (1,303) and Gracie Griffiths (1,287) occupied 22nd and 24th in the overall rankings.
Competing alongside them in the under-16 girls’ category was Amy Tucker (St John Lloyd), who finished on 1,445 after five events over the course of the day.
In a group of six participants in the under-18 girls, fourth place went to Beca Roberts (Bro Pedr), while Flavia Jenkins (Dyffryn Taf ) was fifth as they tallied 3,023 points and 2,967 points respectively.
Roberts jumped a new personal best of 1.59m in the high jump to finish equal first, with Jenkins clocking 9.37 seconds in the 60m hurdles.
