Website shuts down in protest over the ‘Black Friday culture’
A FASHION brand based in Cardigan that Meghan Markle showcased on her visit to Cardiff has shut down its website in protest over Black Friday.
Hiut Denim was founded by husband and wife team David and Clare Hieatt.
A statement on their website said they would be closed for 24 hours last Friday, but would re-open on Saturday “when common sense returns”.
It said: “As a small maker, we come in each day to make the best jeans we can, not the most jeans we can.
“We charge a fair price for them, enough we hope to keep us going as a busi- ness.
“But for us, Black Friday feels like a battle to see who can be the cheapest.
“Lots of people buying things they don’t really need with money they don’t really have.
“And the result, a throwaway culture when the planet needs us to make things to last.”
The brand was inundated with calls and had a three-month waiting list after Megan Markle stepped out at Cardiff Castle wearing a pair of their £175 jeans.
The company name is a combination of the first two letters of the couple’s surname and the word “utility”.
