Leaders take full advantage as rivals come a cropper

-

LLANDYSUL and Newcastle Emlyn lost ground in Costcutter League division one as they were beaten by Llanboidy and Ffostrasol respectively.

As their rivals slipped up, unbeaten leaders St Dogmaels took full advantage and made it nine wins on the trot by coming out on top 3-1 against Felinfach in the Aeron Valley.

Felinfach held the pacesetters for much of the encounter, but they were forced back on the defensive for lengthy periods and never seriously threatened a giant-killing.

Leading marksman Louis Harding fired Saints ahead after six minutes.

But the Milkmen levelled from the penalty spot before the visitors regained the lead in sensational fashion after 67 minutes.

Central midfielder Adam Williams blasted a 30-yard free-kick into the top corner of the net and Harding wrapped up the points with his second goal of the contest.

Llanboidy doubled up on the previous Saturday’s success against Ffostrasol with a hardearned 2-1 win over Llandysul at Cae Dandre.

In an entertaining encounter, defender Fraser Wyatt netted the first goal for Llanboidy with influential midfielder and former skipper Dafydd Makepeace hitting the second.

Ffostrasol have blown hot and cold for much of this term but this was one of their better days in notching up a 2-0 win over visitors Newcastle Emlyn at Troedyrhiw Park.

Wanderers led 1-0 at the interval thanks to an Adam Jones effort and midway through the second period Iwan Jones picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and drove into the roof of the net.

Reigning champions Lampeter Town also made it two wins in succession as they experienced few problems in claiming an 8-1 win over visitors Aberaeron Reserves at North Road.

For the champions, Bryn Jones on his debut netted within 10 seconds of being drafted on as a substitute and along with Gethin Hunter and Jason Jones bagged a brace of goals.

The others came from Trystan Potter and Christy Gale.

The game between Cardigan Town and visitors Crannog at King George V Playing Field was shrouded in controversy after London-based referee Alan Thomas awarded what proved to be a winning penalty for the coastal villagers and sent off a player from each side in the dying seconds.

In a closely-fought game, the Magpies were caught napping on the stroke of half-time as Gary Davies gave Crannog the lead.

Midway through the second period Matt Leonard met a cross from Owen Williams and powered home a header to bring the scores level.

With eight minutes remaining home goalkeeper Steff Marsden was alleged to have committed a foul and from the resulting spotkick former Town player Rhys Davies netted the winner.

Near the end Steff Davies of Cardigan and Crannog’s Jonathan Higgins were involved in a clash and referee Mr Thomas showed red cards to both players, though Cardigan officials were left unhappy at the decision.
