Lucy stars in Athletic win

-

CARMARTHEN Ladies 2nd XI hosted Abergavenny 2nds in division four of the South Wales Women’s Hockey League in their last game before Christmas.

Carmarthen started strongly, with centre midfielders Lili Church and Lucy Davies linking up well with forwards Celyn Thomas, Charlotte Harries, Ffion Raymond and Kate Williams. Carmarthen fought hard to get the first goal but Abergavenny’s defence held out and distributed the ball up the pitch to put pressure on Carmarthen’s defence.

Carmarthen’s defence of Siriol Richards, Leia Thomas, Caitlin Marshall and Marianne Spratt held firm to keep the ball away from goalkeeper Janine Owen, who when called upon made some brilliant saves.

The home side continued to attack hard and were unfortunate not to gain a deserved goal.

They came out fighting in the second period and started to use their speed and youth to drive the balls up the wings via wing-backs Sioned Raymond, Kate Howell and Heledd Hunt and into the D, where they found their forwards to put pressure on Abergavenny’s defence.

Carmarthen, well supported by the home crowd, were on fire now and a lovely ball from Lucy Davies in the middle found Charlotte Harries at the top of the D and she put the ball into the net.

This was the boost that Carmarthen needed. From a short corner a perfect injection from Raymond to the top of the D allowed Harries to slot the second goal of the game.

Carmarthen continued to work hard until the final whistle, showing their teamwork, endurance and determination, though they were unable to add to the 2-0 scoreline.

Lucy Davies was named player of the match by Carmarthen, while Caitlin Marshall was awarded player of the match by Abergavenny.
