The Big Swim This year the Mock Mayor Roger Davies is holding the annual swim on Boxing Day when the tide will be waiting for you at 10.30am. Meet in the main car park, fortify yourself with some mulled wine and make a dash for the sea. This event has increased in popularity with many dressing up in crazy outfits so it is now a great spectacle for the onlookers and supporters.

Ferry services The Glansteffa­n Ferry has been undergoing winter maintenanc­e work and will be back in action on Boxing Day from 8.30am to 10.30am, weather permitting.

Book sale Over the new year holiday period it is worth popping in to the Memorial Hall to browse the many and diverse books on display at very reasonable prices. On Saturday there will be light refreshmen­ts served during the morning. All money raised goes towards the running costs of the hall and these sales have been a vital source of income in recent years. Please support and pick up a bargain.

Church services There will not be a service at Llansteffa­n Church this Sunday as it is the fifth Sunday in the month. Instead there will be a joint service of Holy Communion at St Mary Magdalene Church in lower Saint Clears at 10am bringing together all the churches in the newly formed Local Ministry Area. Panto time The Llangain Players, now an experience­d group of performers, are revisiting their very first panto of 20 years ago Little Red Riding Hood on Friday and Saturday, January 4 and 5 at Llangain Memorial Hall. Learn a new year skill Various Get Started short courses are being run by Coleg Sir Gar’s Ammanford Campus in January. A number of 10-week courses, including childcare, bricklayin­g, playwork, electrical wiring, painting and decorating, health, care, plastering, plumbing, carpentry and tiling. Medallists Well done to Shane Ellis of Ammanford on winning a gold medal in the Inclusive skills category of WorldSkill­s UK Live, the largest such competitio­n in the UK, held at the Birminghha­m NEC. Iestyn Vaughan from Cross Hands earned a silver medal. Both are entry level students at Coleg Sir Gar,Ammanford. Bereavemen­ts Our deepest sympathy is conveyed to all the family of Gethin Richards, of Ffynnon Las, Ammanford, who passed away peacefully on December 6 at his home. The loving husband of Cheryl, much-loved dad of Wayne, Vanessa, Sarah, Gareth and Rhian, and a loving Grandad and Baban.The funeral was on December 20 at Llanelli Crematoriu­m. Condolence­s also to the family of Eiluned Parry of Gwynfryn, Ammanford, who died peaefully at Glanamman Hospital on December 4. Eiluned was the widow of the late Bill Parry, devoted mother of Gillian, Lincoln, David and the late Ewart, a dear mother-in-law and proud grandmothe­r and great-gran.The funeral was on December 14 at Llanelli Crematoriu­m.

Boxing Day charity day Boxing Day is again charity day at Clwb yr Aman ,with a Past versus Present match, Shaun versus Kevin, past and present touch-rugby game at 12.30pm at Cwmamman Park; contact Gavin Lewis, anyone wishing to play. It will be followed later by an artist, Hannah Griffiths in the Amman United RFC clubhouse. There will follow a karaoke and disco ,plus a raffle,and an auction; among the lots to bid for are a Martyn Williams rugby jersey, a round of golf at Machynys Golf Club with Sean Holley and a plane ride around the Gower with pilot Ian Gough in his very own plane. Visit to Pembrey Pupils of Ysgol y Bedol visited Pembrey Country Park last week and throughly enjoyed their day, including a visit by Father Christmas. Bereavemen­t David Jeffrey Fish, of Station Road, Glanamman, sadly passed away on December 9 peacefully at the Amman Valley Hospital. Jeff, formerly of Brynlloi Road, Glanamman, was the loving father of Llinos and Sian, a devoted grandfathe­r of Owain, Angharad, Tomos and Jac. Deepest sympathy to you all on your sad loss. The funeral was on Wednesday, December 19, at Llanelli Crematoriu­m.

No Christmas spirit! There was little Christmas spirit in evidence,with the news that just before Christmas, six bags of coal were stolen from Hen Fethel Chapel, Garnant, prior to their annual Plygain Christmas morning service.Despite the thieves’ unfestive actions, the popular 6am service went ahead as usual, and the fire burned bright !
