In fine voice The Ysgol y Bedol foundation pupils’ choir made a visit to the Amman Valley Hospital just before Christmas and were in fine voice as patients and hospital staff thoroughly enjoyed their performanc­e.

Kind gesture The Pantry Gwaun-caeGurwen food bank were delighted to receive the donation of a number of boxes of food from football club Cwmamman United AFC just before Christmas, a lovely gesture for which the food bank is extremely grateful.

Hospital news Best wishes to Gwenda Davies, Cwmamman Road, Garnant, who was a patient at Prince Phillip Hospital, Llanelli, ward 3, just before Christmas. Bereavemen­t Tom Stewart, of Nant yr Eglwys, Tai’rgwaith, passed away, peacefully at his home on December 10. Tom was the beloved husband of Edwina, much loved father of Glen, Ian, Emily and the late Allen, respected father-in-law of Lynne, loving, proud grandad and great-grandad, and a dear brother and brother-in-law. The funeral was held on Christmas Eve at Llanelli Crematoriu­m. Save The Children Pupils of Ysgol Gwaun-cae-Gurwen wore their splendid Christmas jumpers and at the same time raised money for the Save the Children fund; well done.

Calendars available Ysgol Gwaun-cae-Gurwen currently have new school calendars for sale, at £5 each. Meanwhile, Ysgol y Waun’s doors will re-open after the festive break on Monday.

Y Lolfa-GCG Library Will re-open its doors after the festive break as from Tuesday at 10am; meanwhile, the Local History Club resumes on Monday (7pm) at the venue.

Litter pick The Pembrey and Burry Port Grab and Bag volunteer litter picking group will be meeting at the football pitch/new school car park SN453 005 on January 11 from 10am until noon. All equipment is provided but please be sure to bring a pair of gloves. As well as cleaning up our local areas volunteers can also sign up to receive time credits. Art exhibition Audrey Ranson and Hilary Smith of Burry Port Art Group are exhibiting their paintings and textile work in the Harbour Light tearoom at Burry Port harbour until the end of January. The tearoom is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 4pm but closed Monday and Tuesday.

Photograph­ic society Pembrey and Burry Port Photograph­ic Society meet CARMARTHEN Rotary Club met on Monday, December 17. President Mary Thorley welcomed members and guests to the Christmas lunch. Although this was a time for relaxing and socialisin­g with fellow Rotarians, families and friends, it was also an opportunit­y to raise funds, with a splendid raffle organised by new Rotarians Ivor and Betty McLatchy.

The generosity displayed ensured an excellent selection of prizes. The monies raised will go some way to helping deserving causes in the next year. President Mary also had the pleasant task of inducting our newest associate member Eirwen Evans into the club.

President Mary, as her sponsor, informed members that Eirwen was a friend and loyal, hard-working colleague of many years and she would prove to be an asset to the club in the future. Members were pleased to see the return of past president Raja to the club. AT a recent meeting club president Tony Ensom had the pleasure of introducin­g a speaker from the Bluestone Foundation. Pamela McNamara, director of Bluestone Resorts Ltd, the well-known and popular local holiday venue, explained that the foundation has a charitable purpose organised by Bluestone employees.

The Bluestone Foundation was establishe­d to help people to help themselves through environmen­tal, economic and social projects in Pembrokesh­ire. The foundation underpins the ethos of Bluestone National Park Resort; the unique and beautiful county and its people are close to their hearts. The foundation plans to provide economic growth and social opportunit­ies to the people of West Wales through projects funded by the money the staff raise.

Readers of the Journal will remember that he has been overseeing the administra­tion of a Rotary Internatio­nal grant which has provided many modern and essential facilities to update a government school in Thinnanur, Chennai, India.

Our first meeting of the new year will be on Monday, January 7, when we will be holding our special general meeting.

They are proud to work in partnershi­p with PAVs, who help applicatio­ns through the process before passing them on for the considerat­ion of the Bluestone Foundation Committee which is made up of employees from around the resort. The foundation is supported by the generous donations of the guests and through fundraiser­s organised by staff.

Charities supported include PATCH, the VC Gallery which supports veterans, the Pembrokesh­ire Darwin Centre and also the Paul Sartori Foundation. Members were impressed by the ethos of the Bluestone Foundation and offered a warm round of applause after the talk.

President Tony Ensom then presented to Pamela a cheque to support the worthy cause and gave her a vote of thanks for coming to talk to the members.
