Boxing Day swim Once again there was a good turnout for the dash to the sea with more than 66 people taking the plunge, many in eye-catching and eyewatering outfits and our county councillor Carys braving the waves in full Welsh costume. A couple of the local lads set their breakfast table up to read the papers in the water with liquid refreshment to hand and were much admired for their bravery. Well over a hundred supporters applauded and enjoyed the mulled wine and bacon rolls in what is now an annual social event. Mock mayor Roger Davies thanks all who took part. Church services A service of Holy Communion will be held in Llansteffan Church on Sunday next celebrating Epiphany 1 at the usual time of 9.45am. A warm welcome to you all. A very big thank you to the ladies and the friends of the church who decorated it so beautifully and also to the many people who attended the services over the festive period. We hope you will continue to support us in the coming year.

A fun night out On Saturday, January 19 a fundraiser in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care will take the form of a Bavarian night. Tickets are £10 each which includes refreshments but please supply your own drinks. Start time is 7.30pm and tickets are available from the Village Store or from Una on 241308. Christmas Eve carol singing This event brings together the whole community and extended families and friends in what is one of the bestsupported occasions on the calendar. Organised by the Sports Association but fully supported by several essential individuals each year it was again a hugely enjoyable evening. Many thanks to Keith Marshall, Mia Peace and Sarah Murray for their lovely musical contributions, to Andrew Lamb and Darren Sainty for organising the Christmas tree on the Square, to Etta Richardson and Jamie and Sarah for providing the goodies distributed by Santa. Richard Marsh played his part with enthusiasm and looked splendid. The mulled wine was provided by Paul and Chris in The Castle and mince pies were courtesy of the trustees of the Sports Association. The hall looked especially festive this year so many thanks to the hall committee members and also a very big thank you to the hall caretaker John Evans. During the evening our excellent MC Elgan Evans announced the winners of the best dressed house, with the Sainty household taking first prize and a joint second prize was awarded to Rhian Evans and Delyth Davies. Happy new year to you all.

Glansteffan Ferry update The next scheduled service for the ferry is Saturday but please look at noticeboards for details of special trips. Residents can now apply for tickets at reduced prices. Application forms are available. For a cost of £50 you will be entitled to unlimited crossings in the calendar year but it would not entitle you to any of the specially arranged trips around the estuary. To prove that you live in the area of Llanybri, Llansteffan and Ferryside you will need to show your passport or driving licence and a utility bill.

WI meeting We start 2019 with well-known resident Darren Sainty who will describe some of his exciting experiences on his trips to far-flung places in the world. The date is Monday and the meeting in the Memorial Hall will start at 7.15pm. Tea hostesses are Winnie, Linda and Dot and the competition is the best action photograph. Subscriptions of £42 are due at the first meeting.

Crwbin Silver Band The band held its own Christmas concert at Pontyberem Memorial Hall on December 14. The band under musical director Craig Roberts performed a number of Christmas arrangements that were well received by the audience. Sharing the stage were the pupils of Ysgol Maes y Gwendraeth and their talented pupils provided an excellent and varied programme of entertainment. The school band, led admirably by Jacquie Scaife, played nicely, captivating the audience, as did the vocal ensemble and senior school choir led by music co-ordinator Nicky Roderick – seeing so many youngsters showing their talents on stage is indeed a credit to Ysgol Maes y Gwendraeth. The band would like to thank compere Deris Williams, the school’s staff, programme sponsors as well as the local community for supporting the event. Since the concert, the band were busy supporting carol concerts or services at various venues including Tumble Memorial Hall, Carmel Apostolic Church, Bancffosfelen, and Crwbin Public Hall and the Red Lion, Llandyfaelog, in support of Côr Meibion Dyffryn Tywi. Then the band has been carolling around Llansaint, Pontyberem, Bancffosfelen, Crwbin, Llangyndeyrn and Mynyddcerrig. You might also have heard members playing at Tesco or Morrisons supermarkets in Carmarthen. It has been an extremely hectic time for the members but the money raised is the lifeblood of the band. The band would like to thank the local communities for their loyal support. This is truly appreciated. Diolch yn fawr iawn.

Taxi charges At the recent meeting of the Gwendraeth Group of Community Councils concerns were expressed about the possibility of the costs of taxis to places in the Upper Gwendraeth Valley, including Drefach, being in excess of what the regulations permit. Members heard of examples of alleged excessive charges from both Carmarthen and Llanelli, particularly during late evening and night time. In order to pursue this matter the Gwendraeth Group is asking all linked town and community councils to gather evidence as to the extent of this problem. If you believe that you were excessively charged for a journey from Carmarthen or Llanelli, please forward details to the clerk of your local council, or if you reside within the Gorslas Community Council area you should forward the fullest information to councillor Clive Green (details at top of this column).

Sunday, January 27, Bilingual Eucharist 9.30am. Tuesday, January 29, Midweek Said Eucharist 9.30am. Recycling enthusiasm causing problem! At its last meeting, Llannon Community Council members discussed the increasing problem of the recycling skips in the Neuadd car park. It seems that since the closure of facilities at the Co-op premises, more people are using the hall car park. Unfortunately, these containers cannot take the extra materials and some people are leaving bottles etc on the ground around the bins. They are probably unaware that this action is considered fly-tipping and anyone doing this could be prosecuted. The council clerk is trying to find a solution with county council officials as both councils wish to encourage recycling. In the meantime residents are asked not to leave materials and bottles outside containers and if the containers are full, please try another recycling bank such as the one in Darren Las. There were recycling facilities near the Bridge/Gwendraeth Arms and near Cefneithin Rugby Club but these were removed without explanation. Why can’t we have these back?
