Oakwood the venue for young runners

OAKWOOD Park in Narberth is a new venue for the 2019 Dyfed Secondary Schools Cross Country Championsh­ips.

It will feature pupils from Brianne, Pembrokesh­ire, Ceredigion and Llanelli schools and the first race starts at 11am.

There are eight races on the programme with the age groups beginning at Year 7. It is followed by Years 8-9, Years 10-11 and Years 12-13, both boys and girls.

The first 10 across the line in each of the area championsh­ips, which take place this week in Haverfordw­est, Ammanford, Llangranno­g and Llanelli, go forward to represent their area on January 22 at the Pembrokesh­ire venue.

Places in the Dyfed Schools team for the Welsh Schools Cross Country Championsh­ips at Penlan Arena Fields in Brecon in mid-February are at stake.

Elsewhere, for sprinters, jumpers and throwers, the Carmarthen­shire Secondary Schools Indoor Sportshall athletics is coming up shortly for pupils in Years 7 and 8. It takes place at Carmarthen Leisure Centre in Johnstown a week later on Tuesday, January 29, starting at 10am and running until noon.

The events are two laps, four laps, a 4x2 lap relay, standing long jump, standing triple jump, vertical jump and shot put. Each competitor will be restricted to one track event, one field event and the relay.

An under-13 and under-15 Dyfed Schools team will be chosen to compete in the Welsh Schools Indoor Sportshall Finals at Cwmbran Leisure Centre in March.

Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & Vale, Eryri, Glamorgan Valleys, Powys, North East Wales and South East Wales will provide the opposition on Sunday, March 10. All secondary schools in Carmarthen­shire have been invited to enter teams and any athletes interested in taking part should speak to their PE teacher.
