LOCAL SOCCER LAST-GASP LEWIS WINS IT FOR LLAN

-

LLANGENNECH are through to the second round of the Senior Cup after a hard-fought 3-2 win at Caerbryn.

After getting the better of the early exchanges it came as no surprise when Llangennech broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, Mike O’Mara heading past the keeper from a cross by Wayne Phillips.

But just when it looked as if the visitors were in control, they surrendered the lead a quarter of an hour later and it was 1-1 at half-time.

Five minutes into the second half Llangennech were given the chance to regain the lead when the referee pointed to the spot for a trip in the box on David Lewis, who converted the penalty to make it 2-1.

Although the home team got back on terms for the second time in the 72nd minute, Llangennech were in no mood to be denied and grabbed a late winner from Lewis.

Also through to the second round are Drefach, for whom Chris Amos struck twice in the deserved 3-1 win at home to Penllergaer. Jake Thomas scored the other goal.

It took one 120 minutes to settle the clash between Carway and visiting Llandovery Town.

Eventually it was Llandovery who came out on top 2-1, but they had to come from behind to do so.

Trailing at the break, Llandovery threw everything at their opponents in the second half, which saw Chris Hyde score to send the tie into extra time. Lewis Bailey netted the winner.

Ammanford Town Reserves enjoyed the luxury of a walkover against Abergwili in a scheduled secondround tie, while FC Carmarthen beat CP Suburbs 4-2 in their away clash.

Ross Davies inspired Carmarthen with two well-taken goals, and there was one each for Ashley Prior and Marcus Bryan.

In the Premier division of the LTC Mobility Carmarthenshire League, Evans & Williams climbed back to the top of the table following a com- fortable 4-2 win at home to Killay.

After taking the lead through Steven Andrews in the 10th minute, Corey Borthwick doubled the advan- tage. Two goals from made it 4-0 at half-time.

Although Evans & Williams would have been disappointed to concede twice in the second half, they always looked like hanging on to the points.

Despite having to play 75 minutes with 10 men, Gorseinon Athletic came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw with visiting Carmarthen Stars.

Trailing to a goal from striker Sam Wilson midway through the opening half, Robert Jones rescued a point for Gorseinon in the 32nd minute.

After signing from Llanelli Town in midweek, Jordan Follows made an immediate impact with two goals for defending champions Bwlch Rangers in the 3-2 win against visiting Tumble United.

The home team were always ahead in the game, and added a third from Matthew Hughes.

Trostre Sports are still right in the title chase and sit third in the table following a 3-0 win at home to neigh- Rory Johns bours Dafen.

Most of the pressure was applied by Trostre, who made it count with goals from Anthony James, Nicholas Jenkins and Rhys Griffiths.

Seaside were in action against Loughor Rovers and made ground advantage count when winning 4-0. It was 2-0 at half-time.

It took Seaside just 90 seconds to open their account, Owain Goddard leaving the keeper helpless with a shot from outside the box.

The same player was involved in the second goal on 40 minutes, setting Ben Honeybun up for a tap-in.

The second half continued in the same vein with Seaside on top, and they extended their lead in the 65th minute when Goddard cut inside to drill his shot into the bottom corner.

It was all over when Steve Stone lobbed the keeper from 40 yards to make it 4-0 in the 86th minute.

Pengelli United continued their excellent start to the year, and will have been delighted with a point from the 1-1 draw at Trallwm.

A goal for Pengelli by Craig Jones was cancelled out by Steffan Evans.

In the remaining game in the top flight, Pwll Athletic claimed three precious points when defeating visiting Pontarddulais Town 3-2.

Although Pwll were helped by two successful penalties from Tom Conners, the home team deserved their win. Also on target was Scott Howells.

In the best of the action in division one, Kidwelly Town made it five wins on the bounce when getting the better of Camford Sports 2-1 on their own ground.

Goals from Robert Hammond and Aaron Forey were enough to secure the points for Kidwelly.

There was a hat-trick for John Dixon, which helped Gorseinon Athletic to a 4-0 win at Pontarddulais Town in reserve division one. A fourth goal from James Scott leaves the home team still seeking their first league point of the season.

And goals from Jack Thomas and Isaac Thorne were enough to earn Loughor Rovers Reserves a 2-1 win against visiting Pengelli United Reserves.

As the fight for the title in the Premier division heats up, there are two crunch games scheduled for this Saturday. After winning the away game 5-2 in October, Carmarthen Stars are seeking to do the double against Trostre Sports. Three points for either team will be precious.

And in another key game this weekend, Gorseinon Athletic will be looking to make ground advantage count against defending champions Bwlch Rangers.

Division one title favourites Pontlliw return to league action with a home clash against Camford Sports.

When the two teams played each other at Camford in September it was Pontlliw who won a hard-fought game 3-1.

There has also been activity off the field, and in the draw for the third round of the Rooks Trophies TG Davies Cup there are two all-Premier division ties.

Dafen will host Evans & Williams, while Pontarddulais Town travel to play Trallwm in what is arguably the tie of the round.

Division one promotion contenders Burry Port will be confident of giving Loughor Rovers a run for their money, but Penyfan United and CK Swiss Valley could find it hard going at home to Seaside and Carmarthen Stars respectively.

And in the quarter-final stage of the TAD Builders Darch Cup, hot favourites Evans & Williams Reserves will have the luxury of a home tie against either Llangennech Reserves or Loughor Rovers Reserves.
