REDS BACK ON WINNING TRAIL

THE Llanelli & District Snooker League returned after the holiday break but normal service was soon resumed, with leaders Matchroom Reds completing a convincing 6-1 victory over Reading Room Reds thanks to John Pellew, Andrew Rosser, Craig Price, Paul Thomas and Jamie Clarke, who made an excellent 68 break.

Carl Morgan won for the Burry Port men, for whom Steve Gower threw in a swift 26 break.

Whatever the Reds can do seemingly so can Matchroom Whites; they won 5-2 at New Lodge A, the highlight a cracking 96 clearance break by Tyler Rees. Neil Davies (27 clearance), Tom Twigg and Ashley Edwards added wins, while Dai Roberts made a 32 break in his frame defeat. Michael Wood and Sam Jenkins replied for Lodge.

Pontyberem Workmen’s lie second after winning 5-2 against four-man Tycroes RFC A, whose winning pair were Robert King and Mikey Hopkins. Craig Rees and Kieren Evans won for the hosts.

Llandybie Social consolidat­ed their spot in the top four with a 5-2 success against Snooker World courtesy of Huw Morgan, Wyn Major, Peter Howatson and Geraint Rees. Anthony Krysa and Andrew Whitfield won for the Ammanford side.

Pontarddul­ais Workmen’s won 4-3 at Morfa, and Mike Dodd, Johnny Wilcox, Luke Murrell and Mike Davies earned Gorseinon Workmen’s A a 5-2 win at Trimsaran’s expense. Lewis Lloyd and Lee Holland struck for Trim.

Upper Tumble Blues overcame Burry Port Legion 6-1, while Julian Davies provided Llanelli Cons A’s solitary frame win in a 6-1 defeat at Reading Room Blues. Peter Kelly, Neil Roberts, James Ellis, Chris Howells and Leighton Jones all won for the home side.

Division two leaders Cross Hands B suffered a 5-2 reverse at the hands of New Lodge B, whose winning four were Andrew John, Leighton Cole, George Langford and Derek Morgan. Mal Jones and Mark Davies won for the Gwendraeth Valley men.

Second-placed Ponthenri Social cut the gap to just a point after a 5-2 win at Pontarddul­ais Workmen’s B where Nigel Lewis, Jeff Howells, Alun James and Craig Howells chalked up wins. Gethin Daniel and Lee O’Neill won for the Bont men.

Llandybie RFC won 4-3 at Bryn & Trallwm, and Karl Evans, Paul Davies and Steve Pearson gave Llandybie Social B an aggregate 4-3 win at Great Mountain. Richard Evans, Elliott Rees and Brandon Brown won for the Tumble men.

Nathan Brain, Luke Powell, Brian Edwards and James Anthony gave Calsonic Rivals a 4-3 success against Cross Hands A, who nicked the aggregate, helped by Gerry Keaney and Eric Stevens’s frame wins.

Kevin John, Joe Phillips, Gary Hunt and Ianto Jones were Llanelli Cons Gruffudd Owen, a pupil at Ysgol y Dderwen in Carmarthen and a product of Bronwydd Cricket Club, has been awarded his Welsh cricket cap. Wales selected Gruffudd as a batsman, wicketkeep­er and captain and he became the only player in the squad, despite playing a year up, to feature in every one of the team’s 18 fixtures. During the ceremony held at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, Gruffudd was also presented with the Wales Under-11s player of the year award together with a cash prize from sports manufactur­er Gray-Nicolls. Bs’ winners in a 5-2 victory against Llanesco. Ions Malcolm and Sean Caton replied for the latter.

Pontyberem Workmen’s knocked Ponthenri Social out of the Worthingto­n Cup at the last-16 stage, A. Harris, K. Selwood, C. Rees and P. Rees all winning. Also through are Snooker World, who beat Llanelli Cons A 5-2.
