Man jailed for attacking ex twice in weeks
A MAN has been jailed for assaulting his former partner twice within weeks and during the first attack “dragged her across a road”, a court was told.
Jaryd Rhys Warlow, of Parc Bagnall, Carmarthen, had previously pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault by beating when he appeared at Llanelli Magistrates Court on December 10 and had been remanded in custody ahead of a trial preparation.
However, appearing via video link on Thursday, Warlow, aged 26, changed his plea in front of District Judge Christopher James.
Prosecutor Linda Baker said the assaults took place in the town on November 23 and December 7 last year.
Judge James said: “These were particularly unpleasant assaults of domestic violence in nature.
“They were sustained attacks where you grabbed her by the hair and dragged her around.
“In the first, you dragged her across a road.”
He added that alcohol had played a part.
No detail was given on the exact location in Carmarthen or details of that assault on November 23, other than what district judge James said about the ex-partner being dragged by Warlow.
However, the court heard the second assault happened on December 7 at Warlow’s home at Parc Bagnall.
Mrs Baker, turning to the aftermath of the first assault on November 23, said: “The victim was at A&E when her mother contacted the police to say she had been assaulted.
“Police spoke to her and she was upset and crying.
“She had lacerations to the bridge of her nose and swelling to her upper lip.
“She told police she couldn’t believe what he (Warlow) had done.”
Detailing the second assault on December 7, Mrs Baker said: “She was thrown to the floor and her hair was being grabbed and pulled, she hit her head on the wall or floor.
“She said to him, ‘you said you wouldn’t lay a hand on me’ and he then said, ‘I know I’m sorry, I’ll kill myself’.”
Mrs Baker said the expartner asked him, “is that before or after you kill me?’”
“He then said, ‘I’ll kill you if you want me to?’ and she said, ‘no I don’t want to die’.”
Warlow denied the assaults in police interview after being arrested.
Defence solicitor Andrew Isaac said Warlow was remorseful and had time to reflect on his actions while on remand in prison and had undertaken domestic violence courses while behind bars.
“The second assault happened when the complainant went to his property and he says it would not have happened if she hadn’t gone there.
“He didn’t want contact with her.”
Sentencing Warlow, District Judge James said his ex-partner had been “in a vulnerable predicament and you used your greater strength against her”.
Warlow was sentenced to 16 weeks for both offences, to run concurrently.
He was also given a restraining order not to contact directly or indirectly his ex-partner for two years.
Warlow must also pay a £115 victim surcharge.
