AFTER the huge success of last year’s Carmarthen River Festival, it’s coming back bigger and better for 2019.

Organisers have set the date for Saturday, July 13, from 2pm and want to make sure this stays as one of Carmarthenshire’s top community events.

Julie Rees, who is on the organising committee, said: “We were overwhelmed by the interest in last year’s Welsh National Inflatable Sprint Championship, which saw competitors travelling from as far afield as Birmingham to take part, that we have decided to organise another race again this year.”

She added: “We’re calling all businesses, groups and charities to take part in the raft race which is a great team building event that allows you to raise sponsorship and awareness of your chosen cause.

“Come and have a go in a coracle or even enter into the coracle novice race and you could even walk away with the title of king or queen of the River Towy.”

Kayak and canoe taster sessions will be available also.

The event once again will take place along the Quay in the town, with plenty of family fun in and out of the water.

The festival has become a staple in the town’s calendar of events and continues to attract visitors from near and far every year.

Along with music and entertainers roaming the festival, local water groups are also always involved as well as the emergency services and local water rescue crews, who often hold demonstrations on the river.

The event will be supported once again by the Carmarthenshire Water Safety Partnership which aims to improve education over safety around water as well as installing rescue buoys and signage to warn of the risks surrounding water.

Earlier this month the partnership unveiled a new slipway at Tanerdy, upstream from the town at the notorious 22 spot along the River Towy.

The slipway will allow quick and easy access to the water for rescue teams should an emergency arise.

The new addition of a ramp and new vandalproof lifebuoy cabinets follow barriers which have already been placed on the banks of the 22 to discourage children and youngsters playing in the area.
