Athletes make it count as medals galore head west

THE 2019 West Wales Indoor Athletics Championsh­ips held at Swansea University saw a large number of medals head back to Carmarthen­shire.

Almost 300 athletes had entered the championsh­ips as athletes from Swansea Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Pembrokesh­ire Harriers, Neath Harriers, Llanelli AC and Run4All Neath battled it out across all age groups.

It featured the under-11s making their debuts in an indoor competitio­n, up to the experience­d and elite under-17s to seniors.

Gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to the top three in each event, with around 30 won by athletes from Carmarthen Harriers and Llanelli AC. Following awards for 800m and 1500m runners in Cardiff a week earlier, all the remaining discipline­s were contested.

For the 54 who competed in the open element in the Welsh capital, it was great preparatio­n ahead of the event in Swansea seven days later.

Medals were won by Cai Allen (pole vault), Zara Evans (long jump), Dion James (high jump, 60m hurdles and 60m), Beatrice Morgan (long jump & 60m), Beca Roberts (triple jump, 60m hurdles and high jump), Osian Roberts (high jump and 60m hurdles), Lili Church (high jump), James Sloyan (60m hurdles), Haydn Davies (60m hurdles), Jessica Lee (60m), Ellie Loweth (60m), Alicia Samuel (60m), Casi Gregson (60m), Tom Williams (60m), Regan Jones (shot), Nia Williams (shot), Kacper Krawcewicz (shot), Mari Wilson (shot), Niamh Roberts (60m and long jump) and Magi Dawney (60m).

Others to compete were Ellie-May John (long jump, 60m and shot), Elen Williams (shot), Tom Morgan (60m), Sophia Reid-Thomas (60m), Lili Jones (60m and shot), Cari Adams (60m), Rhodri Roberts (60m), James Thomas (60m and long jump), Eli-Jay Jones (60m), Kahlen Jones (60m) and Amelie Campion (long jump).

Some came away with indoor lifetime bests.

The region’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletics Championsh­ips return to Swansea University on the first weekend in May.
