Anxious Town bosses sweating on Welsh relegation outcome

-

CARMARTHEN Town are in limbo as Welsh football chiefs decide if clubs will be relegated from this season’s JD Cymru Premier.

The Football Association of Wales ended its domestic leagues last week because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Carmarthen were 11th in the table – the lowest-placed club from the south – when the decision was made. They were three points adrift of Penybont with seven games left to play.

Airbus UK Broughton propped up the table.

Old Gold bosses have yet to speak publicly on the situation, though are obviously hoping that the unprecedented events of recent months would mean relegation from the top flight is scrapped.

Swansea University won JD Cymru South but have been denied a Tier 1 license, meaning they cannot be promoted. But that opens the possibility that Haverfordwest County, who finished in second place, could be promoted as they secured a licence.

An FAW statement said: “The FAW board are yet to decide on promotion and relegation between leagues with a decision to be made in due course, taking into account full consideration of the FAW’s pyramid regulations.”

The threat of legal action has been raised further up the table, with Caernarfon Town chairman Paul Evans upset after his club missed out on a 2020-21 European place.

Caernarfon were denied a place in Europe because they finished fifth in the Cymru Premier and fourth-placed Barry Town took the Welsh Cup spot.

“We’re extremely disappointed,” Evans told Radio Cymru.

“We will be looking for some sort of legal advice regarding the fourth place or for compensation after missing out on a lot of money.”

Caernarfon were due to face Cardiff Met in the Welsh Cup semi-final before the competition was postponed.

Connah’s Quay Nomads were crowned champions for the first time under a pointsper-game method.

The New Saints, champions for the previous eight seasons, finished second, ahead of Bala Town in third spot.

Bala and the Saints both go into Europa League qualifying with Barry.
