Wilson takes early control at Glasgow
DANNY Wilson has formally taken over the reins of Glasgow Warriors after receiving a glowing endorsement from new Australia coach Dave Rennie.
Wilson, the former Scarlets forwards chief who was head honcho and the architect of Cardiff Blues lifting the European Challenge Cup with a stunning 31-30 final triumph over Gloucester in Bilbao two years ago, was Scotland forwards coach this season.
Even though the Scots are still in with a chance of the Six Nations title, Wilson will now concentrate on his new role with Glasgow.
“Given that the 2019-20 season remains suspended for the foreseeable future, we felt that the best thing for the club would be to let Danny get started,” declared Warriors managing director Nathan Bombrys.
“With sport in Australia planning to return soon, making the change now will also allow Dave to begin his new role as head coach of the Australian national team. Should we get the opportunity to conclude the 2019-20 season, we will do so under the guidance of Danny.”
Rennie, who was in the frame to succeed Warren Gatland as Wales coach, said: “The original plan was for Danny to immerse himself in the club after the Guinness Six Nations to assist with the transition but that obviously hasn’t been possible.”
And he added: “I’ve been impressed with Danny. He has used the past couple of months well, spoken a lot to staff and players and is in a position to put his stamp on things.
“I know he’ll do a great job and he’s highly regarded by our Scottish internationals.”
Wilson, who also had a spell as forwards coach with the Dragons, said: “My sincere thanks goes to Dave for providing me with an extensive handover that has allowed for this early transition.
“Dave, his staff and players have done a great job, leading the squad to the 2018-19 Guinness PRO14 final, and leaves a solid platform to develop this squad for the future.”
LAST week saw a big Welsh rugby deal done, with Jonah Holmes signing for the Dragons on a long-term contract.
It was one of many well-trailed deals to finally be sorted, but what of the others?
There’s more than a few big moves close to completion.
But who is going where, what’s the reason behind the moves and do any of them have benefits for Wales as well as the regions involved?
Here’s the biggest deals yet to be done...
Since bursting onto the Test scene earlier this year, Nick Tompkins’ future has constantly been discussed.
Now looking like a long-term an
Johnny Williams (left), in action for Newcastle Falcons, is tackled by Ben Vellacott of Gloucester.
With Hadleigh Parkes, Kieron Fonotia and Corey Baldwin all departing, the Scarlets are in desperate need of some midfield reinforcements.
Wales international Tyler Morgan has arrived from the Dragons and a fresh start for him could reinvigorate his career at both domestic and international level.
And it’s looking increasingly likely another Welsh-qualified centre will be joining Morgan at Parc y Scarlets.
Johnny Williams is set to join from Newcastle Falcons. Having been a part of the England U20s side who featured at the 2016 World Championships, he also made an appearance in an uncapped match for England against the Barbarians last summer.
