Safe ways to ‘open up town’
AS the ruling group on Carmarthen Town Council we must commend the enthusiasm and vision of local organisations and individuals in discussing safe ways of ‘opening up the town’ with our Mayor, Cllr Gareth John, as reported in the Journal (May 27).
The vision and determination of all concerned in planning how to overcome the appalling economic and social damage caused by this pandemic is truly magnificent and a credit to our town.
The suggestions made by organisations and traders have been proactive, practical and innovative. For instance, it’s intended to install hand sanitation stations at various locations in the park and town centre, to provide personal protection equipment, and to serve food and drink in the open air where customers can enjoy themselves safely in accordance with social distancing guidelines.
The county council has thrown its weight behind the initiative and is actively planning the changes required to facilitate the gradual reopening of Carmarthen town centre in a safe and economically viable manner as the restrictions are eased.
As a town council we are delighted to be able to provide hanging baskets free of charge for town businesses this year. As Cllr John said during his installation as Mayor, our ancient town has survived plagues and pestilence many times in the past and came back stronger than ever. We’re confident that we’ll also come through this pandemic and see Carmarthen thriving again.
