French-American actress and dancer Leslie Carron on the sands at Cannes. She appeared in 45 films including musicals Gigi and An American in Paris.

1955

French actress and singer Brigitte Bardot was famous for portraying sexually emancipate­d women with hedonistic lifestyles, and was one of the best known sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s. She withdrew from the entertainm­ent industry in 1973 and focussed her attention on campaignin­g for animal rights.

1977

Arnold Schwarzene­gger’s first film was Hercules in New York (1970), but another actor dubbed his lines. The Austrianbo­rn actor’s charm and wit finally came through in the acclaimed documentar­y Pumping Iron (1977), which led to his starring in Conan the Barbarian in 1982.

James Bond and The Saint star, Roger Moore, relaxes on the beach with his wife Louisa.

1955

American film star and singer Doris Day enjoys a dinner at the festival. She recorded more than 650 songs between 1947 and 1967 and starred in 32 films, from musicals and romantic comedies to Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much.

1953

Spartacus actor Kirk Douglas is filmed in the French sunshine. Douglas met his wife Anne at the festival that year. She was working as the head of protocol for Cannes.
