French actress and singer Brigitte Bardot was famous for portraying sexually emancipated women with hedonistic lifestyles, and was one of the best known sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s. She withdrew from the entertainment industry in 1973 and focussed her attention on campaigning for animal rights.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first film was Hercules in New York (1970), but another actor dubbed his lines. The Austrianborn actor’s charm and wit finally came through in the acclaimed documentary Pumping Iron (1977), which led to his starring in Conan the Barbarian in 1982.

American film star and singer Doris Day enjoys a dinner at the festival. She recorded more than 650 songs between 1947 and 1967 and starred in 32 films, from musicals and romantic comedies to Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Spartacus actor Kirk Douglas is filmed in the French sunshine. Douglas met his wife Anne at the festival that year. She was working as the head of protocol for Cannes.
