CALON Wen is a group of 25 organic family farms across Wales that believes in providing exceptional products which taste great and are sustainably produced. The dedicated farmers at Calon Wen, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in April, keep things simple, ensuring that the cows are properly looked after and graze on the fresh, clover rich, organic pastures that haven’t been treated with sprays or chemicals. Organic farming is an alternative agricultural system with practices that reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion and increases soil fertility. The farmers at Calon Wen believe in looking after the soil for future generations to come. Prior to the lockdown, Calon Wen were the main suppliers to the likes of Pret A Manger and Leon and many other hospitality outlets. The pandemic has changed everything for this organic cooperative; reporting that 75 per cent of their organic milk no longer has a route to market. Since then the dairy cooperative has set up a direct to consumer shop, where people can order via its website, whilst also paying close attention to online marketing to tackle the changing environment. The dairy cooperative has collaborated with Daioni Organic for the Welsh Government shielding food box scheme. The food boxes, which people request from their local authority, contain essential foods in packages and tins, providing food for one person who is shielding for a week. They are for those that do not have family or friends to help with shopping and contain Daioni UHT milk supplied by Calon Wen family farms. The cooperative has also ensured minimal waste by shipping surplus dairy produce to food banks in the county to support the local community in this crisis. Dai Miles, the managing director of Calon Wen stated: “We are doing all we can to protect our farmers livelihoods and ensure that they can continue to produce milk long into the future.
