Housing plans submitted for old primary school site

NEW plans for a housing development at a former primary school in Carmarthenshire have been submitted.

Shire Homes (Carms) Ltd wants to build six fourbedroom properties at the Nantygroes County Primary School site, in the village of Milo.

A bat house will also be created and an adjacent bus shelter retained if the scheme is approved by Carmarthenshire Council.

The site’s Ammanfordbased owners propose demolishing the main school building and refectory, but may retain some of the other outbuildings.

Gary Mainwaring, codirector of Shire Homes (Carms), said the plan was for four houses and two dormer bungalows – all with garages.

“We think it’s going to be a really nice site,” he said. “It’s quite a soughtafter area – not far from the Towy Valley and Llandeilo.”

Mr Mainwaring indicated that an affordable housing contribution to the local authority would be part of any planning permission.

However, a Milo resident said he felt the properties were out of keeping with the bungalows along that stretch of road.

The objector, Philip Beedles, said in an email to the council’s planning department: “The village is predominantly older and semi-retired people, who have come to this village for the quieter life.

“Having six big, fourbedroom family properties will change the whole village.”

Mr Mainwaring said he felt the scheme would fit into the area.

Outline planning consent for a seven-house scheme at Nantygroes County Primary School was approved in 2017 before the one-acre plot was marketed for sale by Carmarthenshire Council for offers in the region of £250,000. The school closed a decade ago, with pupils relocating to schools in Llandeilo, Llandybie and Maesybont.
