Launch of heroes awards scheme for ‘doing good work’
CARMARTHENSHIRE Council’s outgoing chairman Kevin Madge is launching an awards scheme to recognise community heroes and those within the council doing good work.
It was one of his last acts before handing over the chairmanship at the council’s annual general meeting.
The Chair’s Appreciation of Thanks Awards highlight outstanding work in the community, volunteering and also recognising the work of fellow councillors and Carmarthenshire Council staff members.
Mr Madge said: “My charities this past year were the three food banks in Carmarthenshire – Ammanford, Carmarthen and Llanelli.
“Now, more than ever, they need all the financial help they can get, and I hope that people will continue to support them.
“One thing I wanted to introduce during my year in office was the Chair’s Appreciation of Thanks Awards, recognising the efforts of people within our communities.
“I had hoped to hold a small function in County Hall, where award winners would have been invited and presented with their awards.
“Due to the current pandemic situation, this will be arranged later in the year when it is safe to do so.
“The new chair of council, councillor Ieuan Davies, will also be carrying on with these awards, so we will hold a joint presentation later on.”
Mr Madge recognised the Llanathne Show committee for outstanding work in the community.
Two individuals who have devoted their time to volunteering, helping the local community, were also praised by Mr Madge.
These were Jane Rees from St Clears, who is chair of trustees of the Bandi Appeal which has raised thousands of pounds for the charity which is a dedicated fundraiser for a children’s centre in Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen.
Also Ken Jones, chair of Carmarthenshire Carers Forum, was recognised.
Mr Madge added: “Two young people I met during the year and left a lasting memory were Casey and Jada Lane.
“They are brother and sister who received a standing ovation at a concert held in Burry Port in January this year to launch Burry Port as a Town of Culture.”
An award to recognise an elected member’s long service and contribution to council life went to Glyn ward county councillor Jim Jones. Council staff member Robert Matthews was recognised by Mr Madge for his contribution to the council.
Mr Madge went on to say: “Carmarthenshire Council staff are still working hard to ensure as many council services as possible can be provided during this very difficult time, and I would like to thank them for their dedication.”
