Aberporth

-

A LOTTERYFUNDED project to transcribe the archives of Aberporth Village Hall has now got under way.

Eight volunteers are hard at work transcribing minutes of the village hall committee which date back to 1928.

The first volumes have just gone live on the hall website (www.aberporthvillagehall.co.uk) with more set to be added over the coming months. The project – which will also include post lockdown scanning days with the community – has been funded by the National Lottery Heritage

Fund. The plan is to get all 80 plus years of minutes onto the hall website and accessible for everyone.

“This is a fascinating project – the minutes are all handwritten and are an illuminating glimpse into village life all those years ago,” said hall project officer Sue Lewis.

The project is a joint effort between the hall committee and Hanes Aberporth History group. It is hoped to stage community scanning days starting in September when people can bring their memories of the hall to be recorded for posterity.

There are still more volumes to transcribe – anyone who would like to help can contact Sue at avhprojectofficer@ gmail.com. are reminded that there is a defibrillator for 999 emergency use at the front of Pontyberem Memorial Hall. Instructions on its use and an intercom for medical direction are within the coded secure unit. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Village volunteers Pontyberem Community Council is co-ordinating local volunteers to help vulnerable villagers, especially the elderly, with shopping trips and keeping in touch during the coronavirus emergency. Fly-tipping blight Unfortunately, the fly-tippers have been at work again in the lanes around Tumble and Llannon. Even in these extraordinary times, someone has dumped tens of bags of waste by farm entrances and on footpaths. Not only is such rubbish an eyesore but it is also hazardous, so please telephone the police 101 with any information or to report fly-tipping.

Your footpaths Now that there are fewer opportunities for exercise, many more people are looking for traffic-free places to walk. While the cycle track is a wonderful asset, there are many public footpaths in Tumble and in Llannon and Cross Hands. One popular path, for example, is the one over the Graig from Heol Lletty towards Tynton Farm but if you want to know about others, there is a map on Llannon Community Council’s website. Public footpaths are the responsibility of Carmarthenshire Council and the county wants to hear your views on improving access for walking and cycling. https://crowd.in/tZAlK9
