Davies would have made a fine All Black, insists Kiwi legend

-

ALL Blacks legend Sean Fitzpatrick has named the Welsh player he would love to see in a New Zealand jersey.

The former New Zealand captain, who played 92 Test for his country, also revealed the one thing that this current Wales crop need to challenge the world’s best.

Speaking on a new episode of WalesOnline’s Welsh Rugby Podcast that is released today, the former Auckland hooker was asked if there were any current Welsh stars he would like to see wearing the silver fern on their chests.

“I think there’d be a few,” he said. “Someone like Jonathan Davies – that sort of talent.

“He’s hugely talented and that’s what you need in teams. You need players who are a world-class level.

“If you want to win things, you need a few of those in your team.

It’s little surprise to hear Davies’s name mentioned given the success he has had in his career.

In particular, he impressed countless Kiwis during the 2017 Lions tour, where he was named player of the series following a number of outstanding performances across the three Tests.

And while Fitzpatrick highlighted Davies’s ability as worthy of donning an All Blacks jersey, the former New Zealand captain also noted what Wales need to do to capitalise on that talent.

“Wales have that world-class talent so it’s just going to take time and belief,” he added. “That’s the one thing that the Welsh of late have needed. They need to believe they can win big competitions and not be satisfied with coming second.

“For us as All Blacks, winning is the most important thing. You need that belief that when you pull that jersey on, you think you’re going to win.

“The players and coaches have to believe that and then you surround yourself with good people. I’m sure Wayne Pivac has done that.”
