£130k grant for park improvement works

-

IMPROVEMENT works will soon be underway at Llyn Llech Owain Country Park thanks to a £130,000 grant.

The works include upgrading the landscaped area around the entrance way, revamping the early years children’s playground and the visitor and education centres.

Carmarthenshire Council’s economic development team secured the funding through the Welsh Government’s Valleys Regional Park (VRP) scheme after the park was awarded VRP Discovery Gateway status – one of only 11 sites across Wales to achieve this.

Improvements will also include the installation of street furniture outside the café and improvements to the footpath and boardwalk.

Work is due to start shortly and expected to be completed by March 2021.

Carmarthenshire Council leader Emlyn Dole said: “We are very fortunate to have this park with its natural beauty surroundings on our doorstep. This investment will not only deliver significant improvements at this popular site but it will also provide a better experience for visitors who use and enjoy the area.”

The VRP promotes and enhances the best of what the valleys have to offer.

The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths said: “The improvements will enhance the surrounding area’s natural resources and will also provide more learning skills opportunities through planned activities.”

Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport Lee Waters MS said: “I am very pleased to be able to award this status and funding package to Llyn Llech Owain Country Park under our Valleys Regional Park initiative.

“We’re investing more than £6.6 million in Discovery Gateways which are strategically important sites for the Valleys Regional Park.”
