The Gwili Railway was originally part of the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth railway which opened in 1860 and operated for more than 100 years until its closure in 1965.

The Gwili Railway was formed in 1975 and was the first standard gauge railway to be preserved in Wales. In 1978 volunteers reopened it as a tourist attraction.

The old smithy dates from the 16th century and closed in the 1950s. It was built by iron entrepreneur Robert Morgan, who lived at Cwmdwyfran Farm above the village.

Cwmdwyfran Chapel is a Calvinistic Methodist (Presbyterian) chapel, founded in 1798 and rebuilt in 1899, with the interior modified in 1909. It is built in the Simple Round-headed style of the gable entry type.

The name Newchurch has been applied to the church since 12th century as the Norman church replaced the Celtic church on this site. The dedication to St Michael is common with many hilltop churches. It reflects the belief, expressed in the Old Testament, that the Archangel Michael was the protector of Israel.

This idea was taken up in the last book in the Bible, Revelation, that Michael will defeat the Devil and the powers of evil.
