Appeal to knitters to help create a giant rainbow blanket

-

THE National Wool Museum in Drefach Felindre, Carmarthenshire, has been appealing to people who can knit, crochet or weave to create eight-inch squares that are being stitched together to create a giant rainbow blanket.

The project was launched during the first Uk-wide lockdown in April last year and when complete, the blanket will go on display at the museum and at Swansea’s Waterfront Museum.

Following this, the blanket will be taken apart to create smaller blankets which will be donated to different charities.

Among the most prolific knitters for the project is Aeres Ingram from Carmarthen, who has made 70 squares so far.

A spokeswoman for the museum said: “We’ve now received almost 700 squares for our blanket of

hope, but we’d some more.

“As we’re back in lockdown, we’re hoping that

keeping busy with crafts for a good cause could help pass the time well. They serve to remind us

that following dark times, there is always light at the end of the tunnel,”

“Aeres Ingram is our most prolific contributor at present, having knitted 70 squares for the blanket.”

Speaking about the project, Aeres said: “Knitting the squares for the rainbow blanket helped me a lot during lockdown and it gave me a sense of belonging and achievement.

“I look forward to seeing the pieces sewn together and the finished piece.”

Youtube videos have also been created to help guide people on how the squares should look.

The museum said all the donated squares have been so colourful, adding: “We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has contributed to the project so far.

“It is lovely to hear how many people found that creating the squares has helped during these unprecedented and challenging times.

“Although we cannot always be physically together, we are in spirit, hope and community.”
