Legislate for a greener future
THE 6th Carbon Budget, delivered by the government’s Climate Change Committee, includes recommendation on the transition of the financial sector to net carbon zero. Shockingly, some of those advisers came from the same major financial institutions which are continuing to massively fund new fossil fuel developments.
HSBC was one of the advising bodies. The bank alone has poured $86.53 billion into fossil fuel developments since the
Paris Agreement in 2016.
This government continues to fund climatedamaging policies at an alarming rate, the latest being the newly announced decision to go ahead with the largest gas power station in Europe (Drax in Yorkshire).
Responsible corporate behaviour starts with government and its advisors. . . but this is too important to leave to government. We can all help move this matter to the top of the agenda.
Banks and pension funds just as much as politicians have the muscle to make the difference. Tell them to fund and legislate for the green future that we and future generations need right now.
