Celebrations of saint go online

-

CARMARTHEN will mark St David’s Day with a week of online events leading up to March 1.

Organisers have promised that Covid-19 restrictions will not prevent people from being able to celebrate the life of Wales’s patron saint virtually - all from the comfort of their own homes and computing devices be it on a laptop, tablet or mobile phone.

A large number of organisations and businesses have been working hard to ensure that people of all ages will be able to enjoy a wide range of cultural activities during the last week of February into March.

This will allow people to commemorate and celebrate St David’s Day throughout Carmarthen - and indeed anywhere in the world via the internet.

The group has been meeting regularly and is led and chaired by mayor of Carmarthen and town and Carmarthenshire County Council Councillor Gareth John.

Cllr John said: “Despite the continuing challenges of the Covid19 restrictions, I am absolutely thrilled that such a significant and varied programme of activities and events has been prepared by so many organisations, who wish to maintain Carmarthen’s tradition of celebrating our patron saint.

“It has taken a huge effort from very many people to produce this programme of events.

“There will be over 30 activities for people to enjoy and I would like to sincerely thank the very many people and organisations who are involved in all the activities, and also those who have pulled this programme of events together.

“The energy and enthusiasm of everyone involved has been remarkable.

“Placing all of these events online and using technology in this way means that people all over the world can celebrate St David’s Day with the people of Carmarthen.”

He added: “There will be a special opportunity for everyone to join in with the singing of our national anthem at midday on St David’s Day.

“This will also be an opportunity to thank all those key workers who have kept our communities - and indeed the entire country - going throughout this pandemic. I am really looking forward to that.

“Hopefully, things will be better this time next year and we can once again hold the traditional St David’s Day parade through the town centre and put on all the street entertainment that has traditionally marked the occasion in our town.”
