Elderly couple in head-on collision
AN elderly couple were taken to a Cardiff hospital after a serious head-on crash in Carmarthen.
The collision happened shortly before 9pm last Tuesday night in the Llangunnor area on the outskirts of the town centre.
Police, firefighters, ambulance crews and a Wales Air Ambulance helicopter were all called to the scene of the collision, which happened on Llangunnor Road between the roundabout next to the Range store and the turning for Penymorfa Lane.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that three people were medically trapped and had to be freed by fire crews using specialist cutting equipment.
A man and a woman, both aged in their 70s, were travelling in one of the cars involved.
Both sustained serious injuries in the crash and were taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
Meanwhile, a man in his 30s, who was travelling in the other car, was also taken to hospital by road ambulance. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
A spokeswoman for Wales Air Ambulance said last Wednesday: “I can confirm that Wales Air Ambulance attended an incident in the Carmarthen area yesterday evening (May 11).
“Our South Wales-based crew arrived at the scene at 21.56. Following critical care treatment from our onboard medics, we escorted two patients via road ambulances to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Our involvement concluded at 00.23.”
A spokesman for Dyfed-powys Police said: “We were called to reports of a head-on collision on Llangunnor Road, at around 8.50pm on Tuesday.
“A male and female from one car were taken to hospital with serious injuries, while a male who was travelling in the second car was taken to hospital by ambulance with injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.”
The road was closed in both directions for more than three hours, reopening at around 12.30am.
