County golf festival proves a big success

-

THE inaugural Carmarthenshire Golf Festival was a big success, with nearly 100 golfers playing three of Carmarthenshire’s finest golf courses on consecutive days of the Spring (Whitsun) Bank Holiday.

Under a collaborative arrangement between Glynhir, Carmarthen and Garnant Park Golf Clubs, the event attracted golfers from all parts of England, North Wales and local South Wales clubs to play a Four Ball Better Ball Stableford as mixed, men’s or ladies’ pairs.

The organisers are indebted to Clubchoice Ireland for sponsoring the fantastic overall main prize of two rounds of golf in Ireland, two nights’ B&B and a return ferry crossing for four people.

Overall winners: Mathew Salmons & Mathew Price (Llantrisant & Pontyclun); runners-up: Rhys Mccarley & Hywel Davies (Glynhir); third: Iwan Thomas & Robert James (Pontardawe).

Daily winners: Glynhir, May 28: Mathew Salmons & Mathew Price (Llantrisant & Pontyclun); Carmarthen, May 29: Lee Griffiths & Mathew Jones (Glynhir); Garnant Park, May 30: Ricky Morgan & Stephen Jones (Garnant Park).

The organisers hope to run the festival again next year on the same Spring (Whitsun) Bank Holiday weekend, with advertisement and bookings made through the golf platform www.golfempire.com

Meanwhile, Carmarthen Golf Club Seniors played for the Kingsbury Cup last week, a greensome format played in pairs, where both players drive and choose the best ball and play alternate shots after that.

Thirty-five pairs took part and it turned out to be a very closely-fought competition, with five pairs scoring 41 points.

Following a careful scrutiny of the cards, coming out on top were Danny O’sullivan and Chris Smith, followed by Paul Mccall and Bruce Morris, and in third were John Bevan and Alan James.

In the remaining places were Nigel Elsom and Alan Williams, and Adrian Thomas and Eirwyn Roberts.

Captain Huw Rees takes a team of seven pairs for the first friendly away match at Tenby today.

Following a couple of postponements due to poor weather, this week’s seniors competition is the WL Davies, which is played over three rounds, with the best two scores to count.
