THE Llanelli & District Bowling League was in full swing over the last week with 14 matches taking place on local greens.

In the Premier division, Havelock Park had their first league match of the 2021 season, hosting Graig Merthyr.

Both teams had completed unbeaten runs in the Carruthers Shield qualifying games and it was Havelock who used home advantage to return a 23-shot winning margin.

Facing their first match in the top flight of local bowls was Dafen Welfare, who were playing at home to Ammanford Park.

With the Park unable to field a full side, they suffered a percentage loss on their short-handed rink, leaving Dafen with an 11 and a quarter-shot win.

Llanelli visited Parc y Dre hoping to get their season moving after a few small losses but were playing on a green where they had not won for many years.

However, with skips Martyn Roberts and Alan Bowen taking considerable leads for the visitors, they soon developed a sizeable gap.

Despite a concerted effort by the home side, Llanelli consistently kept the margin to around 20 shots for the last quarter of the game, going on to win by 17.

Brynhyfryd continued with their excellent return to the Premier division by visiting Carmarthen and returning a sixshot winning margin.

Division one leaders Loughor suffered their first defeat of the season, losing by a single shot at Calsonic Wanderers after a maximum points win at home to Blue Anchor in a midweek fixture.

Burry Port started their season in good form, winning both in the midweek and weekend games and nearly taking maximum points in both, dropping just a single one at New Lodge on Saturday.

In Llandybie, Tybie achieved their first win this year, at the expense of Gorseinon.

In division two, Llangennech & Bryn lead the table after beating Llandeilo at home, but both Ty’rfran and Crusaders are hot on their heels. Parc William also found form with a massive home win, and maximum points, against Cwmamman.

This week see a further 15 matches being held between Wednesday and Saturday.
