WI meeting A very successful and enjoyable meeting was held outdoors on a warm and pleasant afternoon and enjoyed by 18 members. The atmosphere was party like and there was a lot of catching up to do. President Helen Bowen Morgan raised several issues mentioned in the Monthly Letter with interest shown in the walking treasure hunt, hunt the dragon and the day trip to Bath. Helen congratulated Vania and Barbara on their win in the County 200 club and co-ordinator for the WI Show Jean Thomas gathered the remaining entries and established pen names. Due to a clash of dates for some members the 70th anniversary party arranged for October 8 in the Mansion Hotel has been moved on to Wednesday, October 13. While enjoying refreshments and generally socialising more general topics were discussed and Una Davies put forward her proposal to expand the Dragon event into something more ambitious. Several suggestions were put forward and will be discussed at the July meeting.

Friends of Tenovus Earlier this year, Llandybie Friends of Tenovus Cancer Care were extremely productive and knitted over 400 Easter chicks, raising over £650 for the charity. Not the group’s first fundraising effort over the years, well done to you all.

Bereavements Our deepest sympathy to all the family following the sad passing away of Mrs Zandra Morgan (née Thomas), of Iscennen Road, Ammanford, on May 30, peacefully at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli. Zandra was the widow of the late Keith (“Kriwki”), a loving mother of Marc, Paul and Jozan, and a proud grandmother of five. Our condolences are also expressed to the bereaved family of Mr Alan Thomas, of Ffordd y Glowyr, Betws, who sadly died, suddenly on May 29 at his home. Alan was the dearly loved husband of Julia and will be sorely missed by all his family and friends.

Nonogenarian Well-known former Ammanford lady Mrs Peggy Laugharne, latterly of Hall Street, celebrated her 95th birthday yesterday; Peggy currently resides with her son Howard and daughter in law Mariel in Garnant.

Birthday news Mrs Peggy Laugharne, of Cwmamman Road, Garnant, celebrated her 95th birthday yesterday; penblwydd hapus, Peggy. Anniversary Mr and Mrs Mark and Maria Morgan, of Maesybedol, Garnant, celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on June 22. Bereavement Deepest condolences to the family of Mr Austin Baber, of Tircoed Road, Glanamman, who passed away, peacefully on May 31, at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli. Austin was the loving husband of Dorothy and will be sadly missed by family and friends.the funeral was on June 15 at Llanelli Crematorium.

Nonogenarian David Emrys Price, originally of Tir y Bach Farm, Garnnat, currently of Harold Street, Ammanford, celebrated his 90th birthday earlier this month.

Sad news His numerous friends were so sorry to hear news last week of the passing away of a former Garnant man; Mr Doug Carter, or “Doug the Raven” as he was popularly known, was the former landlord of the Raven Inn, Cwmamman Road, Garnant, for many years; our deepest sympathy to all Doug’s family on their sad news. Walkabout surgery news During his latest walkabout surgery in the Cwm, Garnant County Cllr Kevin Madge has received complaints from residents of Lower Station Road, Garnant, that when drivers come up from the Ammanford side they are not able to see the street sign; cars are coming down the hill looking for Upper Station Road, the local park or Ysgol y Bedol as a result. And, apparently, there were two signs there a few years ago. Cllr Madge has passed on the complaint and request for new signage to the Highways Department at Carmarthenshire Council.

Safety gate Cllr Madge has also asked the council for the safety gate on the riverside walk between Upper Station Road and Tir Syr Walter, Garnant, to be replaced after the original gate was stolen. This sadly means children on their bikes are now in danger of cycling into the main road on a blind, sharp bend as there is nothing to slow them down. Due to the obvious safety issue, he has asked for a new gate as soon as is possible. Flower beds and weeding Finally, County Cllr Madge, following several enquiries from local residents, has asked that weed spraying be undertaken behind the doctor’s surgery at the Raven, Garnant, and the bus stops neraby. The whole of Garnant and Glanamman also needs weed spraying in many spots. A flower bed by the surgery is also missing, and has been since last year, particularly due to Covid restrictions, and a request has been made to the council for new flower beds be planted there for the summer.
