LOUGHOR GRAB THE LAST SPOT

-

LOUGHOR Bowls Club have taken the last remaining place in the National Club Championship after a victory against Brynhyfryd at Parc Howard.

The match had previously been scheduled for early May but had been postponed due to bad weather.

They will now play at Barry Romilly in the knockout stages on July 10.

In the Llanelli & District League, reigning champions Kidwelly Town notched up two wins with a midweek victory at Parc Stephens against Carmarthen followed by a second at Ammanford Park on Saturday.

Havelock Park also enjoyed similar success, winning at home against Dafen Welfare and at Parc Howard against Brynhyfryd.

Carmarthen’s poor week continued on Saturday when they were edged out by Llanelli.

Division one leaders Calsonic Wanderers retained their position despite not having a match on Saturday afternoon.

After beating New Lodge at Gorseinon on Wednesday, their place at the top could have been taken by Burry Port on Saturday when they faced an in-form Loughor at home, but it was the visitors who took the points by a big 45-shot margin.

These three teams are gradually edging away from the others, but the season has barely started and there is a lot to play for.

In division two, Llangennech & Bryn lost their first game, at Cross Hands on Saturday.

They remain top but are being challenged by Ty’rfran, who are unbeaten.

They played at Pontarddulais in midweek, coming away with maximum points but did not have a game on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the division, Parc William and Crusaders are both producing some big results, each winning three of their four opening matches.

Carmarthen County competitions are slowly approaching their climax with the two finalists in each of the 10 disciplines progressing to the National finals in

Llandrindod Wells.

Play in the County semi-finals will be held in the week of July 12.

Meanwhile, the local bowls scene is mourning the loss of Pontarddulais ace Gilbert Miles.

A former rugby player for both Swansea and Llanelli, his finest sporting moment came at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.

He was selected to represent Wales with playing partner Julie Thomas in the Para-sport mixed B2/B3 category.

Despite only winning two of their five group games they made it through to the semi-finals with a superior shot difference.

A narrow defeat to South Africa led to them playing Scotland in the bronze medal decider, and with the final delivery of the match Miles delivered an outstanding draw shot to win the game for Wales.

His funeral takes place this Thursday with a short service at Pontarddulais, which is followed by a procession to Llanelli Crematorium for 1pm.
