WHITE WINE QUESTION TIME

WE all love a gossip with friends over a glass of something nice but if they were to stick a microphone in our faces most of us would suddenly stop speculating over Mrs Nextdoor’s alleged affair with her son-in-law.

We’d be even less likely to share our marital troubles, how the kids are struggling at school and our habit of glugging back a jugful of gravy as if it were a can of pop.

Kate Thornton’s guests are remarkably unhushed by their chats being recorded – the three above subjects are all theirs – even those celebrities who are usually more reticent about giving interviews.

There are a lot of the usual suspects. Scroll down the list of episodes and you can pinpoint exactly when an interviewee had a new book, album or TV show to promote and was doing the podcast rounds, but with 149 episodes to choose from there are plenty of less obvious people to pick.

WHERE TO START: Black Grape’s Shaun Ryder reveals he didn’t learn the alphabet until he was 28 due to undiagnosed dyslexia and ADHD and how he’s steering his daughter away from repeating some of his own struggles. Available on all usual podcast apps.

CAUTIONARY TALES

While kids are brought up on sanitised versions of fairy tales originally devised to terrify them out of breaking rules, this podcast is created to educate grown-ups.

Tim Hartford, journalist and author of The Undercover Economist, shares a range of real life mistakes – some rectified, others haunting their perpetrators to their dying day.

The fascinating stories include that of Dutch art expert and forger ‘The Pope’ and the British lord who wanted to build the best airship in the world through nefarious means.

WHERE TO START: Bowie, Jazz and the Unplayable Piano compares jazz musician Keith Jarrett walking out of the biggest concert of his career due to a broken piano with David Bowie and Brian Eno’s love of leaving their comfort zones. Available on all usual podcast apps.
