Seniors storm to Classic joy

-

CARMARTHEN Golf Club’s seniors’ B team have rounded off a superb season with silverware.

They travelled to the Grove club for the final of the South Wales Classic where they faced a strong Cottrell Park side.

Captain Huw Rees kept to the same six golfers who had played in each of the previous five rounds.

The first points on the board were provided by the second pair of Graham Owens and Chris Jones, who were playing against four and 14-handicappers.

Although the game was close for the duration of the front nine, a burst of three consecutive holes around the turn saw the Carmarthen pair close the match with a 3&2 win.

Len Davies and Alan Williams were up against a five and sevenhandicappers and they realised immediately that it was going to be a tough match when they went two down after three holes.

But consistent play saw them claw their way back into the contest and by the 15th they were three up.

Although they lost the 16th, a half on the 17th saw them win the game 2&1.

The last match saw Clive Thomas and Tim Harries take on a two and 12-handicapper. After a loss and a win in the first three holes, there were halves until the ninth which they lost and a subsequent birdie on the 11th saw them go two down.

A net five and a par on the 14th by Thomas saw them get back to all square, and after each player had arrived on the 16th green, captain Rees relayed the news that the top two from Carmarthen had won and the cup was theirs.

An honourable half was agreed, meaning that Thomas and Harries had remained unbeaten during the campaign.

The winning of the cup was great achievement for the team itself, made more remarkable that all their games were played away.

The seniors’ A Team were in the Bowl final, but came up against an in-form Neath team and were beaten 2.5-0.5.
