DYFED CLAIM MEDAL JOY AT TOP EVENT

THE Welsh Schools National Cross Country Championsh­ips, one of the Welsh Schools Athletic Associatio­n’s biggest competitio­ns of the year, was staged for the 59th time at Penlan Arena in Brecon.

Eight Welsh districts – Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & Vale, Dyfed, Powys, Eryri, Glamorgan Valleys, North East Wales and South East Wales – staged qualifying races or selected teams based on previous winter events.

More than 450 runners participat­ed and there were races for year 7, junior, middle and senior categories.

Welsh Schools vests were up for grabs with the SIAB Schools Cross Country Internatio­nal 2022 hosted by Welsh Schools at Pembrey Country Park on Saturday, March 26.

A total of 73 athletes from Brianne, Pembrokesh­ire, Ceredigion and Llanelli secondary schools and colleges represente­d the Dyfed district.

The Middle Boys and Senior Boys’ age groups won silver medals in the team event, led home by individual podium finishes in first and third.

The Year 7 Girls and Junior Boys were also on the podium, taking home bronze medals.

Elsewhere, Carmarthen Harriers Dafydd Jones and Ben Thomas were two of 14 athletes selected to represent Wales at the PUL5K Road Race at Battersea Park in London.

Jones crossed the line in 14.39 and Thomas also finished in the top 100 with a time of 14.47.
