Some very familiar faces in the Youth Opera’s performance of ‘Grease’

-

IF you are lucky enough to have tickets to see Carmarthen Youth Opera’s performance of ‘Grease’ this week, you will see some very familiar faces.

The role of ‘Teen Angel’ will be played by special guests and some former cast members of Carmarthen Youth Opera.

Thursday evening will see Steffan Hughes take on this iconic role, followed by Gareth Evans on Friday evening.

Jordan Dickin will perform during the Saturday matinee, and on Saturday evening Mark Llewelyn Evans will finish the show run.

Other past Youth Opera members are also returning to support the cast – Benn Llewellyn Williams will play Johnny Casino and Rhys Morgan the role of Vince Fontaine.

Joanne Morris, who is the Youth Opera’s production assistant and who has been with the company from the start, takes to the stage as Miss Lynch.

The past week has been a very busy week as preparations moved to the Lyric Theatre.

The orchestra, conducted again by Bridget Radford, have been going through sound checks, costumes have been having lastminute fittings and alterations and the cast have been fine-tuning the show.

Director Dan Williams explained: “All practices and rehearsals had been risk-assessed and measures put in place to try to safeguard everyone.

“Whilst things have been different this year – and it took us all time to adjust – the 43-strong cast have risen to the challenges and are thoroughly enjoying being back performing again.

“We are all very excited by the prospect of entertaining and thrilling Carmarthen audiences once again.”

Audiences will hear and enjoy all of the iconic Grease songs performed to the high standard we have come to expect of CYO.

Grease, of course, is the 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Named after the 1950s United States working-class youth sub-culture known as greasers, the musical is set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School.

Most of you will be familiar with the screen adaptation in 1978, which featured greaser Danny Zuko and Australian transfer student Sandy Olsson. The film starred John Travolta and Olivia Newtonjohn as Danny and Sandy.

The show starts on Thursday and runs though to Saturday. Evening performances start at 7.30pm and the matinee performance on Saturday starts at 2pm.

You can get tickets directly from the Lyric Theatre, in person or by telephone on 0345 226 3510, or via their website www. theatrausirgar.co.uk
