St Cynnwr WI

-

St Cynnwr held its first meeting of the year at Carmarthen Bowls Club with president Julie starting with details from the County WI newsletter.

There is plenty going on with book clubs, walks, a zoom evening with sculptor Mared Davies, a book quiz and a creative day.

This includes classes on Zentangle, painted bottles with lights and floral art – creating a miniature flower arrangement in a shell.

Roselle gave a great account of the recent WI weekend in London – a chilly January trip but one full of interest. Caroline gave an update on plans for entering items in the County WI Show on July 2, encouraging people to have a go at floral art, cookery, literature, craft and art. The theme this year is ‘new beginnings’.

The meeting was then treated to another presentation by Frankie Owen Pavitt. Last year she taught us ‘arm knitting’ but this time she went back to her roots as a horticulturalist and teacher with a talk all about the ‘winter garden’.

She had a vast array of plant material, everything from Mahonia to Citrus Trifoliata.

With descriptions of the special qualities of the plants, in terms of their stems, leaves, flowers, berries and scents, she also explained their special features for security, groundcover, cookery and pollinators.

She was thanked for her presentation by another keen gardener, Barbara, who summed up how much we had all learnt about the plants we see during the Wintertime.

The next meeting of St Cynnwr WI will be on St David’s Day at New Inn, Dryslwyn, starting at 5pm. The theme will be ‘cawl a chan’, led by Muriel, with her family providing the celebratory meal for us to share and enjoy.
