‘Spring clean’ is forging ahead

THE community “spring clean” of Carmarthen is forging ahead.

The campaign, led by town mayor Councillor Gareth John, is taking place throughout the spring and a lot of work has already been carried out across the town by a number of volunteers and organisations.

Carmarthen Round Table has carried out a litter-pick from Abergwili to Johnstown and chairman Johnny Griffiths said: “We are delighted that we are able to contribute to this initiative and help make Carmarthen a more attractive place for all of us.

“The Round Table has been carrying out litter-picks for a long time, and hopefully more groups will join in with us this spring.”

Hwb Tywi Hub Men2men have been tidying up the floral borders at the entrance to the town’s St Peter’s car park and other areas within the town.

The Hywel Dda University Health Board-funded service is for men, led by men and has been set up to enable men to connect with others, generating a sense of belonging, fellowship, and a space in which they may feel comfortable to talk about how they are really feeling.

Fred Luckman at the Hwb said: “These shared activities help men talk about themselves in an often deep and simple manner. This challenges isolation and offers a supportive environment in which men can make changes in how they feel about themselves and their lives.

“We have all really enjoyed planting the borders and look forward to future projects in Carmarthen.”

Carmarthen Town Council and

Carmarthenshire Council staff have also been busy during the first few weeks of the “spring clean”.

Planters in Red Street and Nott Square have been washed ready for replanting, and a significant amount of litter has been cleaned from Parc Hinds, behind the gardens of houses in Priory Street.

The Wilko’s car park has been cleaned up and efforts already under way to further improve the appearance of the area.

Arrangements are in hand to clean the town-centre monuments, and this will take place during the coming weeks.

Cllr John said: “Many people and organisations have been carrying out litter-picks in our local area for many years and I am most grateful to them for doing that to help the work of the local authorities and improve our local environment.

“We are taking that a little bit further here by having a co-ordinated and focused approach over a relatively short period of time.”

Carmarthen Town Council is a litter-collecting hub as part of the Keep Wales Tidy initiative, and equipment including waste bags and litter grabs are available at St Peter’s Civic Hall, Nott Square, Carmarthen.
