ATHLETICS MEETING KICKS OFF SUMMER

THE 2022 summer track and field season got under way in Wales with the Swansea Harriers outdoor track and field open meeting at the city’s university sports campus.

Attracting almost 400 athletes, the event offered the sprint hurdles, 100m, 300m, 400m, 800m, long jump, high jump, discus, shot and pole vault.

Elsewhere, Iwan Thomas, Jake Lynock and Steffan Davies travelled to Swindon to compete in the 3000m at the Mark Cawte Memorial Open Meeting.

Thomas was the first to finish in 9:10.50 followed by Lynock and Davies in 9:43.37 and 9:57.05 respective­ly.

At the Yate AC Throws Open Meeting, Morgan Batten recorded a best throw of 48.06m in the men’s javelin.

Frank Morgan won his 3000m heat at the Watford Open Graded Meeting in a season’s best time of 8:34.41.

The next five months will see track and field fixtures held at local, regional and national level for athletes, including junior and senior open meetings, schools competitio­ns, and Welsh Athletics outdoor championsh­ips.
