-

PORT Talbot Motor Club opens the 2022 Protyre MSUK National Asphalt Championship this Saturday with nearly 80 of the country’s top tarmacadam drivers returning to do battle over approximately 70 miles of the legendary roads that snake over the military training area of Mynydd Epynt, above Sennybridge.

The Nigel Ferguson Fabricators Tour of Epynt is part of the Pro-tyre Motorsport UK Asphalt Rally Championship, the JD Tyres Welsh National Tarmacadam Championship, the Promotive Engineering Group King of Epynt Challenge, the IPS Paint Supplies rally challenge and the ANWCC Stage Rally Championship.

Last year’s winner Neil Roskell leads the field away with co-driver Andrew Roughead.

The top ten crews and cars are: 1. Neil Roskell/ Andrew Roughead (Ford Fiesta R5); 2. Damian Cole/ Charlotte Cole (Skoda Fabia R5); 3. Bob Fowden (Llanelli)/ Aled Davies (Swansea) (Subaru Impreza WRC); 4. Mark Kelly/ Neil Coleman (Ford Fiesta R5); 5. John Stone/ Rhys Stoneman (Swansea) (VW Polo); 6. Huw James/ Dafydd Evans (Tregaron) (Ford Escort Mk2); 7. Steve Wood (Aberystwyth)/ Dale Bowen (Ford Fiesta WRC); 8. James Williams/ Dai Roberts (Carmarthenshire) (Hyundai I20R5); 9. Roger Moran/ Den Golding (Skoda Fabia R5); 10. Darren Atkinson/ Phil Sandham (Ford Escort Mk2).

The quality continues throughout the field, including Pembroke’s Tom Llewellin in an Escort, Swansea man Thomas Cooper in his Number One Home Improvements Mitsubishi, his grandfather Phil Turner of Swansea sidelined after a crash in his TCS Plant Skoda at the recent Caerwent Stages.

Rally sponsor for 2022, Marcus Pagett, drives his Nissan Micra Kit Car, and West Wales legend Terry Brown is out in his usual Ford Escort Mk2, and a terrific day’s action is in store.

The MOD has agreed to allow the return of spectators to the ranges. Three viewing locations allow the viewing of stages one to seven throughout the day, all accessed via Church Hill off the

A40 Sennybridge to Llandovery road, the access better known as the ‘dual carriageway’ from Llywel.

The viewing locations will be the Llandeilo’r Fan triangle, the Burma Road entrance/exit from the centre road, and near to ‘German Village’ at the junction with the Cilienni track.

More detailed information will be provided in a programme (£10 per car and occupants) available at the Military Gate at the top of the ‘dual carriageway’.

Spectators are asked to note that parking will also be controlled at all the viewing points to maintain safety, with disabled pass holders viewing near the German Village location.

Stage one starts at 9am.
