Enjoy some golden moments as estuary’s ferry service sets sail

- KATHRYN WILLIAMS Reporter kathryn.williams@walesonline.co.uk

THE 10-person ferry which channels visitors between estuary-side villages Llansteffan and Ferryside in Carmarthenshire is going one better this spring and summer and giving sea lovers and view chasers the opportunity to book onto their sunset boat trips.

The early evening trip will take around 45 minutes and takes passengers towards the mouth of the River Taf to look over Laugharne, back over towards Burry Port and Kidwelly and then up the River Towy towards Towy Boat Club and then back down to see sunsets over the castle in Llansteffan.

If the weather is playing ball, the views from the boat will be stunning, looking back onto the Llansteffan shore and its cliffside castle – a view which is just as nice the other way, too.

Not only this, the boat you’ll be on – the Glansteffan – is a high-performance aluminium-hulled boat, fitted with a ‘Sealegs Amphibious Enablement System’ which allows it to drive out of the water onto land. This helps protect the surrounding beach.

Also, the timetable of the trips, as well as the shuttles across to Llansteffan and Ferryside, are beholden to weather conditions and tide times, so visitors are advised to check with their website and Facebook for up-to-date news on the boat running.

Director of Carmarthen Bay Ferries – which runs the passenger ferry – Andrew Kirkpatrick told us why the sunset trip was such a lovely way to spend an

evening in a small corner of the county.

“The sheer beauty and tranquillity of the estuary. Apart from the villages of Llansteffan and Ferryside, it’s not developed at all. It’s almost completely unspoiled,” he said.

“It’s just so peaceful out there and we aim to turn the engines off so people can just enjoy the tranquillity. And there’s the beauty of the castle too, and the light is magical.”
