Fiesta quiz night At the annual Fiesta quiz held in the Castle Inn, 17 teams battled it out with some very testing questions set by Richard Meade. Congratulations to the winners Scotts Bay Rowdies, just six marks ahead of Ruby Tuesdays, and close behind in third place were Ann’s Army. Thanks to all for your support and especial thanks to Paul Norman and Klara Hsin. All money raised goes towards next year.s Fiesta expenses. Scarecrow competition With 17 scarecrows on display scattered throughout the village the judging of this proved very difficult, with repeated visits necessary to some. Julia Jones, assisted by Ryan and Tracey Davies, covered a fair amount of miles before deciding the most humorous should be awarded to Simon Charles and family at The

Laurels. The most timely prize went to David Hudson at Cambria House, and the best children’s scarecrow was won by Abigail and Tyler in Westfa. The overall winner, and awarded the perpetual trophy, was Liz Dutch at Brig y Don. Well done to all who entered. There were some very creative ideas on display and a big thank you to Julia for judging.

Mock Mayor Election A full house in the Memorial Hall for this much missed annual event with excitement growing at the news that there were eight candidates, the most for many years. Master of ceremonies was Phil Edwards, who was ably assisted by Elgan Evans as the technical expert. It all began with the serious de-robing of current Mayor Roger Davies by County Councillor Carys Jones. Phil then introduced the first candidate Vladmir Rasputin and his cohorts in the form of five Cossack-style dancers. It was exciting and colourful and deserved the huge applause. They were followed by a Big Wise Owl, the only female candidate who had a full manifesto promising an improvement in education, financial status, sporting opportunities and lots else, even optimistically suggesting the Olympics could be held here. Next up was Simon Charles as Huge Edwards who randomly interviewed locals to hear their views. It seems Watkin Jones was available on the day and he quite brilliantly played several roles. A laugh a minute. Huge and Watkin were followed by Prince Charles, who had problems with his prosthetic ears, a problem not foretold by his assistant Tony Bowen, a political fortune teller. Next up was Roger Davies, who has held the position for many years, filling our diaries with some great events. One of his more popular promises was the installation of a moving walkway between the pubs. Ryan Davies and his assistant Tracey played a clever word game designed to encourage us to do the right thing when voting. Next up was the police officer from Allo Allo Alistair Chambers and Klara his Swedish sidekick. Last up were Mor and Dor Gareth and Howell Thomas, who were very entertaining but their promises obscure. Voting was secure in the hands of the Presiding Officer Richard Meade and it was a close-run thing between Roger and the Wise Owl Maureen Davies but yet again it was the deciding votes from Patagonia which made Roger the Mayor again. An excellent evening of fun and laughter. Well done to all candidates, and especial thanks to Phil and Elgan for ensuring it all went with a swing.

Carnival Day A more low key carnival this year but enjoyable none the less. The sun shone on us and it provided an opportunity for families and friends and visitors to meet and mingle after two fallow years. Three excellent floats followed the Mock Mayor from the Square to the Morfa. Placed first by the guest judges Simon and Linda Weaver was the wonderful construction that was Top Gun courtesy of Tony Bowen. Placed second was the WI with Wizz Air struggling to fly off to farflung places, and in third was The Party at Number 10 that wasn’t a party. The judging of the various individuals who were dressed in fancy dress was organised by the Mock Mayor. Many youngsters tackled the various sports set out and the challenging circuit training. The day concluded with a a children’s disco and a BBQ outside the Castle Inn. A successful and enjoyable day in perfect weather.
