Strenuous 10.5-mile hike in the mountains

-

ON Sunday, Cyril Phillips led a group of eight walkers on a strenuous 10.5-mile hike in the Brecon Beacons, taking in Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Ddu.

It was a beautiful sunny day with clear views of the surrounding countryside.

The group commenced their trek from Cwmgwdi car park, a former army training area, and followed a fairly flat route taking in common land, lanes and fields, and passing Plas y Gaer to meet the road at Pont y Caniedydd to start the very long climb up towards Cribyn mountain. A brief stop was taken before the beginning of the two mile climb towards the base of Cribyn, following the Bryn Teg ridge. They then took their time climbing Cribyn – one of the steepest walkable hills in the Brecon Beacons. Having arrived at the top they had a break taking in the breathtaking 360-degree views.

The group then descended to the valley where they met the long distance trail Beacons Way, before climbing along the edge of Craig Cwm Sere (or Jacob’s ladder as it is sometimes called) to reach Pen y Fan. Lunch was then taken enjoying once again the spectacular views of the surrounding hills and countryside.

Their route then took them to Corn Ddu at 873 metres, and from there they followed Craig Cwm Llwch to Tommy Jones obelisk, and commenced the long descent down the valley of Cwm Llwch. They then followed the Nant Cwm Llwch river and traced their return journey using various side roads to arrive back at the car park.

On Saturday, Andrew Padfield will lead a six-mile walk in the Stackpole Quay area, and on Sunday, Brian Lowans will lead a 10-mile walk in the Briton Ferry area.
