Wanderers too hot for local rivals

-

CARMARTHEN Wanderers Seconds recorded their third consecutive win with a 67-run victory at home to Ammanford in Premier League West.

Stand-in Wanderers skipper Giles Thomas had no hesitation batting in the sun-drenched conditions, and the home side got off to a good start as they reached 125-2 after 30 overs, with Oli John (27) and Thomas (41) combining for a vital 99run partnership.

When both departed, the only batsman to reach double figures was James Connick with a hardhit 24 as the Wanderers were all out for 177 in the 42nd over.

Tomos Roach was Ammanford’s top wicket-taker with 4-20.

Cian Roach and Iwan Matthews picked up a couple of wickets each.

After tea Simon Rogers took two quick wickets and spinner Steff Jones chipped in with a wicket, which left Ammanford on 30-3 after 10 overs.

Young spinners Henry Moore (3-32) and Cai Griffiths (2-12) tore through the middle and lower order and with Jac Bennett chipping in with a late wicket, Ammanford fell to 110 all out.

Cian Roach top-scored with 27 and Steffan Williams added 22.

The Wanderers moved above Ammanford in the table as a result.

They travel to St Helen’s to play Swansea on Saturday, while Ammanford head to Ynystawe.

Llanelli produced one of their best performances of the season as they saw off Ynysygerwn by 10 wickets at Stradey Park.

The visitors were all out for 145. Grant Watkins made 52 and Richard Harris 44, but the introduction of Harri Rees into the attack proved decisive as he claimed figures of 5-14.

Daniel Lewis chipped in with 3-25.

Llanelli openers Rhydian Morgan and Josh Weeds then both scored unbeaten 70s to blast their side home in just 11 overs.

Gorseinon went down by 17 runs at home to Clydach. The Swansea Valley side were all out for 222, Sandeep Munagala top-scoring with 55. Jac Benson took 3-23.

Chris Richards (59) and Benson (47) looked to have put Gorseinon in control as they chased their target, but their dismissals triggered a collapse and they were dismissed for 205.

Pontarddulais beat Swansea by three wickets. William Jones took 3-44 as Swansea made 1908, with Azrin Azmy scoring 49.
