A CARMARTHENSHIRE reverend who became the first chaplain for the Welsh Ambulance Service is publishing his second book.
Reverend Mike Shephard, who lives in Cwmffrwd on the outskirts of Carmarthen, is a listening ear for the 3,000-strong ambulance service workforce and provides pastoral care to colleagues and their families.
The former probation officer joined the service in January 2020 and quickly and inadvertently became a crucial source of support for staff through the Covid-19 pandemic.
Rev Shephard in effect became voluntary chaplain to all of Wales albeit by telephone, email and, occasionally, via Zoom.
It was suggested that he write a weekly article for Siren, the online staff newsletter of the Welsh Ambulance Service, with a potential readership of 3,000, which was collated and published into a book called Signs of Hope in Times of Darkness.
Sales of it raised £2,500 for the Welsh Ambulance Service.
Now Rev Shephard has collated more newsletters for his second usual it was a great success. Treasurer’s report was given by Rhian before the accounts are passed to Joanne. It was noted that ridge tiles on the pavilion roof had slipped and Carl will organise their reinstatement. Spare tiles are available. Damage to the MUGA electricity units had been reported by a local resident and repair to be arranged as soon as possible. A written request was received from the Football Club asking permission for the cricket field to be used for senior football for the next season. There was unanimous agreement and also written agreement from Richard Marsh, acting chair of the cricket club. This is a temporary measure and conditional on the pitch being kept in good order, moveable goal posts to be used and the boundary netting to be re-instated. Agreement was given for Roger Davies to store surplus chairs in the shed and Joanne notified all about the car boot sale on August 27.

He said: “I want to use the profits this time to print books which can be given free of charge to those of limited means. I would like to see the books placed in drop-in centres or community cafes as the content, I believe could be of help to others.”
The title of the book mirrors the first article within it which deals with coincidences.
Speaking about his role as chaplain, he said: “It was like learning a new language.
“Writing a column for a secular organisation is very different to compiling a church magazine.
“If one wrote ‘religiously’ it would have repelled readers and have driven them away.
“I was challenged to write supportive and meaningful articles whilst avoiding religious terminology of any kind.
“I made mistakes along the way but have demonstrated, nonetheless, that it can be done.”
