A ramble to the spectacular falls

-

ON Sunday, Carolyn Hills led the Carmarthen Ramblers on a ninemile circular walk from Newcastle Emlyn to Cenarth and back again.

The walk started at The Mart car park in Newcastle Emlyn, from where they made their way past the shops and turned to visit the ruins of a castle built in 1240.

The Group then climbed uphill alongside the road through Adpar until they turned onto a lane at Bryndioddef Uchaf, and followed this lane until they turned left off onto a footpath leading through farm fields. Here they stopped for a coffee break and enjoyed the excellent views looking south. They continued on the footpath until it reached a lane where they turned right to make their way past Pontceri and on to Cwm-cou where they turned left to follow a path along the edge of attractive woodland to reach Penwenallt Farm. Now they took a quiet lane to reach a footpath which led them to the Afon Teifi, where they came to the new boardwalk which has been built alongside the river, replacing the old footpath which had been rocky, slippery, and quite difficult in places. The Group enjoyed walking the half-mile alongside the river on the new boardwalk. They reached the falls at Cenarth, which were quite spectacular once again since the rains have returned following the dry summer.

After a pleasant lunch stop at the picnic site across the river, light rain began to fall as they continued their walk. Taking a footpath past St Llawddog Church they followed the path between farm fields to Gillo-fach, crossed over the A484, and continued on a good track, passing Gelligatt and Cwmbach Cottage, until they arrived at a country lane and turned right.

This took them uphill to a track on the left where they turned to drop back down to Newcastle Emlyn.
