BIKE ACE RHYS IS FRENCH STAR
RHYS Evans last week completed in the International Six-day Enduro – known to many as the Olympics of off-road motorcycling events.
This year the event was held in France and 20-year-old Evans – who hails from Newcastle Emlyn – was one of three riders competing as part of the Dyfed Dirt Bike Club team, alongside Gareth and Alun Jones from North Wales.
With the event kicking into gear on Monday morning, Evans was straight in at the deep end as he had no experience of it before.
But he soon got to grips with the extremely challenging conditions, as the previous week had been spent walking long special tests every day with fitness being a key factor.
As the week progressed, so did the heat with one day hitting 35 degrees. But the West Walian kept on going among the 400-plus riders entered in the international event.
Having completed the fifth and toughest day of the race, Saturday was only a matter of completing the traditional motocross test which this year was close to the start-finish area.
All three Dyfed riders finished the event, netting the Lampeter-based outfit an outstanding 32nd overall out of 128 teams.
Team manager Meirion Scourfield, who is from outside Cardigan, said: “I’ve been honoured to step in as team manager. We came as a team and finished as a team. The riders would like to thank key sponsors and everybody for their support, no matter how small or large.
“Next year the event heads to Argentina. Will the DDBC be there? Only time will tell.”
