Charity boss is taking on 52 half marathons
A WELSH charity boss from Carmarthen is taking on the challenge of a lifetime by running 52 half marathons and next month’s TCS London Marathon in support of the British Heart Foundation’s lifesaving research.
Head of BHF Cymru, Rhodri Thomas, 44, began running as a way to keep fit, but since starting 10 years ago he’s taken part in several marathons and an ultra-marathon.
On Sunday, October 2, he will run the London Marathon.
He said: “For the last five and a half years, while I’ve been part of the BHF in Wales, I’ve met and worked with incredible people volunteering, fundraising and sharing their stories.
“They’ve always inspired me to take on challenges and raise money for the charity.
“Every community is touched by someone living with a heart condition, which can be challenging and often frightening for them and those who love them.
“I know that the research the BHF funds across the UK, and here in Wales, can make a real difference and I’m delighted to be part of Team BHF this year.
“As part of my fundraising, I’m taking on a 52 half marathon in a 2022 challenge, where I’m attempting to run a half marathon distance every week this year.
Rhodri added: “I’m two thirds of the way through my challenge and pushing through as I approach the London Marathon itself.
“Meeting other people running the marathon this year has been a fantastic inspiration, and has really motivated me to keep focused on my reasons for taking on this challenge.
“Together we hope to turbo-charge pioneering research into regenerative medicine – including the development of a heart healing patch, which could save and improve the lives of millions of people worldwide affected by heart failure.
“Every single step we take will power science with the potential to heal damaged hearts.
“We’re extremely grateful to everyone taking part in this year’s marathon for the BHF and I can’t wait to join them in celebrating after the finish line.”
